The incident of alleged gang rape of a student in a private medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal has shocked the entire state. While talking to the media, the victim’s father demanded justice for his daughter and said that he does not want such an incident to happen to any other daughter.

The victim’s father said, ‘I had brought my daughter to Bengal with great expectations so that she could become a doctor and fulfill her dreams. Whatever happened is unbearable for any father. Now I have decided that I will leave Bengal. He also said that he wants to give the harshest punishment to the accused so that no one else can do the same.

Appealed to Mamta Banerjee
Addressing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the victim’s father said, ‘Forgive me if I have said something wrong. I’m your son. I just want that no other daughter of the country has to suffer such torture. Justice should be provided to my daughter as soon as possible. When the victim’s father was asked about the CBI investigation, he said that it depends on the state government, but their only aim is to ensure that justice is delivered quickly and strictly.

The victim’s friend was also arrested
The court of West Bardhaman district of the state sent the victim’s friend to police custody for seven days. This student is a second year student from Odisha. The incident took place outside the private medical college campus in Durgapur on Friday night, when she had gone for dinner with her friend. Six accused have been arrested in this case. Five accused are already in police custody. The victim’s parents had lodged an FIR at New Township police station after the incident.

Police has got great success in Durgapur rape case. The police have arrested the main accused, whose name was in the complaint lodged by the victim’s father. The accused has been identified as the victim’s male friend and was taken into custody on Monday evening.

Action taken after victim’s statement
According to officials, the victim’s statement under Section 164 revealed that the accused raped her after she went out with him. On this basis the police arrested the accused. He will be presented in court on Tuesday morning.

So far 5 people were arrested in this case. After the arrest of the victim’s friend this number has increased to 6. Investigation has revealed that all five were present during the incident. The detailed statement of the victim gave important clues to the police to connect the events.

Police Commissioner gave information
Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Chaudhary told in the press conference that the investigation is going on at a fast pace. He said, ‘The victim’s mobile phone has been recovered. Information related to the clothes and physical appearance of the accused friend has been collected. Our team, along with the accused friend, went to the spot and reconstructed the sequence of events.

Gang rape sections will not be imposed
Police Commissioner said that in the initial investigation the possibility of gangrape has been ruled out. He said that on the basis of the victim’s statement and initial evidence, it has been established that the rape was committed by only one person. Forensic and medical reports are awaited. The role of the victim’s friend is suspicious and remains under investigation.

Further action will be taken after forensic report
Police have sent the clothes of one of the accused for forensic examination. Officials said that further action will be taken after the forensic and medical reports are received. At present, interrogation of all the arrested accused is going on and the investigation is progressing.

6 accused arrested so far
The police officer said that out of the six arrested accused, one is a former security guard of a private college, while the other is currently working in another hospital. One accused is a temporary employee in the local municipal body while the other is unemployed. A second year student from Jaleshwar, Odisha was allegedly raped by some people outside the premises of a private medical college in Durgapur on Friday night. At the time of the incident, the victim had gone for dinner with a friend. The police arrested him on Tuesday. The second year MBBS student, resident of Jaleshwar, Odisha, was allegedly raped outside the premises of a private medical college in Durgapur on October 10.

The opposition is continuously attacking Mamata Banerjee over the gang rape of a medical student in Durgapur, West Bengal. Amidst the continuous rhetoric of the opposition, on Monday (October 13, 2025), a leader of Trinamool Congress gave a controversial comment. He said that women should not go out late at night, police cannot provide security everywhere.

TMC MP Saugata Roy said regarding the rape of the student that the police can take action only after the incident comes to light. He requested women to remain alert. This comment of the TMC MP came two days after the gang rape of a student in Durgapur on Friday (October 10, 2025).

MP Saugata Roy said during a conversation with ANI, ‘Such cases rarely come in Bengal. The safety of women in Bengal is better than any other state, but women should not step out of their colleges late at night because the police cannot patrol everywhere.

The MP further said, ‘Security cannot be provided at every inch. Police cannot be deployed on every road. Police can take action after the incident comes to light. Therefore, women should also be cautious.

CM Mamata Banerjee’s request to girl students

After this incident on Friday, questions are being raised on the security arrangements of women in West Bengal. Regarding the incident, CM Banerjee raised the question that how the victim of Durgapur Medical College gang rape case was outside at 12:30 in the night. He urged the girl students not to come out of their hostel or home late at night.

Regarding the matter, the police said that this incident happened on Friday night, when the second year medical college student had gone out for dinner with a friend. A senior police officer informed on Monday (October 13, 2025) that two more accused have been arrested in the case, taking the number of accused to five.

He further said, ‘The Chief Minister is saying such things, she is not monitoring law and order properly. She is unable to see it, so she is blaming the victim. We find this behavior very objectionable. Our advice is that they have issued a fatwa banning girls from leaving their homes.

Victim’s father appeals to Odisha government

A 23-year-old girl was gang-raped in Durgapur, West Bengal. Citing threat to his daughter’s life, the victim’s father on Sunday (October 12, 2025) appealed to the Odisha government to transfer her to Bhubaneswar for treatment. The victim is a second year MBBS student and is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital in Durgapur.

Officials said that on Friday (October 10, 2025) at around 8 pm, three men allegedly raped a Dalit student when she had gone out of the campus with her male student. The student’s father said that the family feels unsafe in West Bengal and is too scared to trust anyone.

Our stance is that such crimes will not be tolerated at all. Three accused have been arrested and the police is searching for others. No one will be spared.

Police arrested 3 youths on rape charges

The girl, resident of Balasore district of Odisha, was studying in a private medical college in Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal. On Friday evening, some people allegedly gang-raped her outside the college premises. West Bengal Police has arrested three accused so far.

Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW) Chairperson Shobhana Mohanty on Sunday demanded the immediate arrest of all the accused involved in the gang rape case of a medical student from the state in Durgapur.

Addressing a press conference here, Mohanty said that this is a sad incident not only for Odisha but for the entire country. He said, ‘Soon after the incident came to light, the Odisha government wrote a letter to the West Bengal government requesting it to take immediate action. The Chief Minister has spoken to the victim’s family.

OSCW demands strict action

Mohanty said that she is keeping a close watch on the matter and is talking to the concerned officials. He told that a team from Balasore district has gone to the spot to provide necessary help to the victim. OSCW chief Mohanty, while criticizing the Trinamool Congress government of neighboring state West Bengal, said, ‘Law and order has deteriorated in the state (West Bengal). Three accused were arrested 36 hours after the incident, while two others are still absconding.

He said, ‘I have heard that the accused are from the minority community. I demand immediate arrest of the remaining two accused and strict legal action against all those involved in this heinous act. Mohanty said that she is planning to go to the spot with her team to meet the victim and inquire about her health condition.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan requested CM Banerjee

Meanwhile, terming the incident as ‘disgusting and painful’, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said in a post, ‘It is learned that the victim is receiving medical care. Pray for his speedy recovery. There is no place in the society for such shameful incidents and crimes against women. He called upon West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to ensure fair investigation, prompt action and strict punishment for the culprits of this heinous crime.

Similarly, Odisha Congress President Bhaktacharan Das also condemned the incident and demanded immediate arrest of all the accused. Das told reporters here, ‘I strongly condemn the gang rape of an Oriya girl in West Bengal. Strict action should be taken against the accused. I have also asked my women’s wing to take necessary action to provide justice to the victim.
