After a long wait in Delhi, now the way for making new ration cards is going to open. Giving great relief to thousands of needy families of the capital, the Delhi government has decided to restart the ration card application process after almost eight years. The special thing is that this time the entire system will be online, due to which the process from application to verification is expected to become easier and more transparent than before.

According to the Food Supply and Consumer Department, from May 18, applications for ration cards will be accepted only through the e-District portal. The government has decided to completely end the offline application system. Its objective is said to be to increase transparency in the process and prevent fraud.

Preparation to issue two lakh new ration cards

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced to issue two lakh new ration cards this year on the occasion of the first anniversary of the government. The government claims that with this, economically weaker families will be able to get the benefits of food security schemes faster. Due to the application process being closed for a long time, many eligible families were out of the government ration scheme.

These documents will be necessary for application

Under the new system, every applicant making a ration card will have to enter the identity numbers of all the family members. Apart from this, it will be mandatory to upload copy of residence certificate, income certificate and electricity bill online. The department says that through digital documents, the verification process will be faster and those giving wrong information can be easily identified.

The eldest woman of the family will become the head

Making a major change in the ration card rules, the government has decided to make the eldest female member of the family the head of the card. If the female member of the family is a minor, then this responsibility will be given to the eldest male member of the family until she completes 18 years. The government is considering this as an important step towards women empowerment.

More families will be eligible by increasing the income limit

To expand the scope of the ration scheme, the government has increased the annual family income limit from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.20 lakh. Earlier, those families who were left out of the scheme due to income limit, now their chances of getting benefits have also increased.

These families will not get ration cards

The government has clarified that income tax paying people, government employees, families owning four wheelers, people owning property in A-E category colonies and families with electricity connections more than 2 KW will not be eligible for this scheme. The government says that this system has been implemented to extend the benefits of the scheme only to the truly needy families.

Fake beneficiaries will be banned

Delhi government claims that the new digital system will strictly stop fake ration cards and those taking benefits wrongly. Preparations have been made to rapidly deliver the benefits of food grains to eligible families through online verification and document verification.
