This process can be triggered by diseases like cancer.

Although lung cancer is the main cause, finger clubbing can also be caused by other diseases, such as chronic lung infections including bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, liver diseases such as cirrhosis and some other cancers such as liver cancer or Hodgkin’s lymphoma along with viral infections including HIV, hepatitis B and C.

How to recognize at home

There is an easy test called Schamroth sign. Join the index fingers of both hands in such a way that the nails are facing each other. Under normal circumstances, a small diamond shaped gap will be visible in the middle. If this gap is not visible and the nails are bent forward, then it could be a sign of finger clubbing.

What is the treatment?

There is no treatment for finger clubbing on its own. The solution is to control the disease that causes it. If the cause is temporary or reversible, clubbing may subside. But in lung cancer or other chronic diseases, this change can also remain permanent.
