Which Country Spends Most On Diabetes: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease and is one of the most common non-communicable diseases in the world. On average, 1 in every 10 adults is affected by it. The number of people suffering from diabetes is continuously increasing, due to which not only is the pressure on the health system increasing, but the economies of the countries are also being affected. A new study has given the figures of how much each country spends on diabetes. Let us tell you about it in detail.

What came out in the research?

This research has been done jointly by a team of experts from IIASA and Vienna University of Economics and Business. The study assessed the economic impact of diabetes in 204 countries between 2020 and 2050. The results are shocking.

Excluding informal care provided by family members, the global cost of diabetes is approximately US$10 trillion, which is about 0.2 percent of the world’s annual GDP. But when informal care is also included, this cost rises to about $152 trillion, or about 1.7 percent of world GDP. This figure is considered very important in case of diseases like diabetes.

How much does it cost in which country?

According to the report, 85 percent to 90 percent of the total economic burden is related to informal care. The reason for this is that the number of patients with diabetes is 30 to 50 times more than the number of deaths. Even though diabetes is more prevalent in low-income countries, America bears the highest economic cost. After this comes India and China. It is estimated that its total impact on India is about 11.4 trillion US dollars. If we talk about America, the cost related to diabetes there has reached 16.5 trillion dollars, whereas the burden on China has been estimated at about 11 trillion dollars.

More burden on rich countries

The research also revealed that a major difference between high-income and low-income countries lies in the distribution of treatment costs and losses related to loss of ability to work. In rich countries, the cost of treatment accounts for about 41 percent of the total economic burden, while in poor countries it is limited to only 14 percent. Michael Kuhn, co-author of the study and acting head of the Economic Frontiers Research Group at IIASA, says that this situation clearly shows that access to better and modern treatment for chronic diseases like diabetes is mainly limited to high-income countries.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency Skin Symptoms: Sometimes some changes seen on the skin are not just a cosmetic problem, but can also be a sign of some problem going on inside the body. Recent research has revealed that the skin condition acanthosis nigricans may be linked to the risk of type 2 diabetes, especially in young people. The study included young overweight people who had symptoms of AN on their skin through a case-control analysis. According to research, the risk of type-2 diabetes in participants who had AN was found to be almost double compared to those obese people who did not have AA. It also became clear from the study that EN was the main cause of insulin resistance in these people.

What came out in the research

Data from the National Library of Medicine revealed that the severity of AN around the neck was directly linked to fasting insulin levels and insulin resistance test results. In such cases, doctors recommend getting tests related to blood sugar and insulin done, so that the problem can be detected in time. However, it is not necessary that every time darkening of the skin is related to diabetes. In some cases it may also be due to deficiency of Vitamin B12. Medical reviews show that hyperpigmentation caused by B12 deficiency can appear on the face, palms, and skin folds, sometimes resembling hormonal problems.

Problem due to B12 deficiency

With B12 deficiency, symptoms like fatigue, numbness or tingling in hands and feet, pain in the tongue and yellowing of the skin can also be seen. If a person has sudden darkening of skin folds, eats a mostly plant-based diet, or has digestive problems, doctors usually get B12 levels checked. In some people, blackening of elbows or knees also occurs due to continuous rubbing or pressure. Sitting in the same position for a long time, repeatedly resting elbows on a hard surface or sitting on knees increases friction on the skin. Due to this, melanin starts getting produced more and the skin becomes thick and dry. This type of darkening is usually not velvety and does not extend to the neck or armpits.

What do experts say

According to experts, in such cases, using creams containing lactic acid and urea for several months exfoliates the upper layer of the skin and the complexion may become lighter. Along with this, moisturizing and avoiding constant pressure on the elbows is also important. Apart from this, dark spots can also remain after inflammatory skin diseases like eczema, psoriasis or contact dermatitis, which is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, in such cases it is necessary to treat the inflammation first, then moisturizer and sun protection are adopted as maintenance.

When should one see a doctor?

If the darkening of the skin starts spreading rapidly, becomes very thick or itchy, or is accompanied by symptoms such as weight loss, weakness and stomach pain, a doctor should be contacted immediately. In some rare cases, the sudden and severe appearance of EN may also be associated with internal cancer, especially in the elderly. According to the CDC, acanthosis nigricans is a common skin condition associated with diabetes. Therefore, people who show symptoms should definitely get their blood sugar and insulin resistance checked, so that serious diseases can be avoided in time.

Diabetes Treatment: World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on 14 November, the purpose of which is to make people aware about it. Increase in sugar i.e. blood sugar does not happen just by eating sweets. There are many reasons which have nothing to do with sweets or sweets. People keep asking the question, “Why does my sugar increase even though I don’t eat sweets?” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are different reasons for its increase, in which our lifestyle is most responsible. Let us tell you why blood sugar increases even if you do not eat sweets.

According to signs, there are 8 major reasons for increasing blood sugar, in which sugar keeps increasing even without eating sweets. In these-

morning sugar rise

Between 4 and 8 in the morning, the body produces certain hormones, such as cortisol and growth hormone. This tells your liver to make more glucose so you can wake up. If you have diabetes, your body is not able to produce enough insulin, so sugar increases in the morning.

Effect of reduced sugar at night

If sugar levels drop too low at night, the body produces more glucose in the morning to compensate. Because of this, sugar increases as soon as you wake up in the morning. This mostly happens in people taking insulin.

cold, cough or flu

When you have a viral or cold, the body releases stress hormones, which increase blood sugar.

Tension

Too much tension, worry, less sleep, too much heat, cold or sunburn, all these put the body under stress. Due to stress, cortisol increases and this also increases blood sugar.

lack of water in the body

Blood becomes thick when there is less water. Glucose is not high, but due to less water the blood sugar level appears increased. Additionally, excess sugar increases urination, which leads to further dehydration.

Periods and menopause

During these days, estrogen is low, due to which the body does not respond properly to insulin. This may increase blood sugar.

steroid medicines

Steroid medicines given in case of inflammation or any disease, such as prednisone, increase glucose in the liver and reduce the ability of insulin – this increases sugar.

not taking medicine at the right time

If diabetes medicine or insulin is not taken on time, or is taken in less quantity, then sugar increases automatically.
