A natural disaster has struck Russia amid the war with Ukraine. Strong earthquake tremors were felt in the Kuril Islands of Russia on Tuesday (January 13, 2026). According to the report of the US Geological Survey (USGS), a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.3 was felt at 6:34 pm (local time) on Tuesday (January 13, 2026) in the Kuril Islands between Russia and Japan. This earthquake occurred at 44.6 degrees north and 149.1 degrees east, about 545 km east of Asahikawa, Japan. Its center was recorded at a depth of 45 kilometers from the earth.

There is no danger of tsunami from earthquake- USGS

The Kuril Islands are located in a very active seismic zone between Russia and Japan, where earthquakes occur frequently due to the movement of tectonic plates. However, there is no danger of tsunami from this earthquake. USGS has issued a green alert for deaths and economic losses due to earthquakes. This means the possibility of loss of life and property is less.

The population of this area lives in such houses, which can withstand moderate earthquake tremors. The most vulnerable building types are reinforced concrete frames without reinforced brick walls. According to USGS, the total population of the Kuril Islands is around 2,000.

Last year there was a terrible earthquake of 8.7 magnitude

Last year, on July 30, 2025, this island was hit by a massive earthquake of 8.7 magnitude, which was now equal to the sixth most powerful earthquake recorded worldwide. However, there were no casualties in Russia. At the same time, since the earthquake of July 30, 2025, more than 100 tremors of magnitude 4.4 or more were felt in this area. At the same time, there is no news of any loss of life or property due to the earthquake that occurred on Tuesday (January 13).

Kuril Islands are considered part of the Ring of Fire

The Kuril Islands are a volcanic archipelago located in the far east of Russia. This region is considered part of the Ring of Fire, where earthquakes and volcanic activities are common. The Kuril Islands and the Kamchatka Peninsula are one of the most seismic and volcanic regions on Earth, where hundreds of small and large earthquakes occur every year. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake was felt in 121 km east of Severo-Kurilsk, Russia. This earthquake occurred at around 11 am Indian time. After this earthquake, the craseninicov volcano has become active on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

According to the ‘Xinhua’ news agency, the earthquake center was at a depth of 40.8 km, which was recorded at 50.53 degrees northern latitude and 157.83 degrees east longitude. Due to this earthquake, the crushninicov volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula also exploded. According to the Kamchatka Volcanic Irption Response Team (Kvert), the 1,856 meter high was seen to be raised ashes up to about 6,000 meters height from this volcano.

Volcano exploded for the first time in 600 years

Kvert chief Olga Girina told RIA Novosti, “This is the first explosion of Krashenininicov in 600 years”. He said that lava dome is being constructed on the slopes of volcanoes, as well as a continuous ash from the crater located in the north direction with sharp steam and gas emissions. This volcano is named on the explorer Stephen Crasninikov.

The volcano is made up of two overwhelmed stratozwalamukhi within a huge Caldera located in the Chronotskey Nature Reserve, about 50 km from the regional capital Petropavalovsk-Kampachkski. The last lava leakage in Crasninikov was close to 1463. Smoke-related activity was recorded in 1963, but no explosion or leakage was reported.

Earthquake of 8.7 magnitude came on 30 July

This seismic activity comes after a major earthquake of 8.7 magnitude on July 30, which is now equivalent to the sixth most powerful earthquake recorded worldwide. Tsunami has been directly warned in Chile, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Advisory continues in the Pacific coastal areas of Columbia and Galapagos Islands in Ecuador.

Danger alert on the islands of Oceania
Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Ua Huka of Marksas Islands, Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa and Vanuatu have been issued danger alert. Advisory continues in Samoa while alert has been removed from Tonga, Fiji, Cook Islands, Guam, CNMI and American Samoa.

Status in Asia and Russia under control
The tsunami advisory continues on the Pacific coast of Japan. At the same time, warnings have been removed from Taiwan, Philippines, Shanghai and Jhejiang regions of China and other areas of Japan. The alert has also been terminated from Severo-Kurilsk of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, Sakhalin Island and North Kuril Islands.
