MK Stalin on SIR: Tamil Nadu’s ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Monday filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Special Intensive Revision process.

The move comes after the Election Commission of India (ECI) last week issued orders for the next phase of SIR of voter lists in 12 states and union territories, which will cover a total of 51 crore voters.

Nomination work will start from November 4

The nomination process for this phase will begin from November 4 and the final voter list will be published on February 7, 2026, with January 1, 2026, as the base date. Assembly elections are to be held in the five states/union territories next year in April-May 2026. West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are included in the list of 12 states where the SIR process will run in the next three months. However, Assam, which is one of the election states, is not included in this list.

CM M.K. Stalin accused ECI of conspiracy

On Monday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin accused the Election Commission (ECI) of a conspiracy and said the SIR was a malicious attempt aimed at removing opposition voters.

Stalin said, “To stop this undemocratic step, we called an all-party meeting and passed a resolution condemning the SIR. The complete revision of the voter list by the Election Commission a few months before the elections is a deliberate strategy to remove legitimate voters.”

Big allegation made giving example of Bihar

CM Stalin alleged that a similar process was adopted in Bihar also, where lakhs of genuine voters were removed from the list. He said that the first opposition to this controversial process started from Tamil Nadu, after which Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and opposition leaders of Bihar also opposed it. Stalin said, “Even after the legal case was registered, the Election Commission did not give any satisfactory answer”.

AIADMK and BJP also targeted

Stalin met AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. He also made a scathing attack on Palaniswami and said that he was playing a double game and was afraid of the Election Commission because of his links with BJP. He further said that migrant laborers from Bihar have got respect and employment in Tamil Nadu, but the Prime Minister is “doing political drama for electoral gains in Bihar.”

There was chaos during the public meeting of actor and TVK chief Vijay on Saturday (27 September 2025) in Karur district of Tamil Nadu. The huge crowd gathered at the venue became uncontrollable, due to which there was a stampede. In this accident, 39 people died and many others were injured.

During the rally, many people fell unconscious, who were immediately admitted to the nearest hospitals. According to sources, the situation deteriorated due to excessive crowd at the site and the situation got out of control. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also described this incident as very tragic. He wrote on X that the unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu is very sad. My condolences are with those families who have lost their loved ones. I wish to provide them strength in this difficult time. I pray for all the injured to recover early.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s reaction

Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed deep grief over the Karur accident. He wrote on the social media platform x that I am very sad about the tragic death in a stampede in Karur, Tamil Nadu. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the dead. I pray to God that they should give them the power to bear this sorrow and wish the injured to get well soon. Shah also assured the Tamil Nadu government of all possible help.

AIADMK General Secretary Palaniswami’s response

Palaniswami of AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi also expressed grief over the accident. Expressing condolences on behalf of his party, he wrote that the news of death of people and treatment of many others in hospitals due to the chaos of the crowd during the TVK’s publicity meeting held in Karur is shocking and tragic. I express my deep condolences to the bereaved families. Palaniswami also instructed former minister MR Vijayabhaskar to go to the hospital to help the injured.

Tamil Nadu’s main opposition party ‘All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’ (AIADMK) has made a big announcement before the election. AIADMK general secretary E Palaniswami said on Tuesday (July 22) that after the formation of his party government, the newlyweds will give gold and silk sarees.

Talking to silk weavers, Palaniswami said that the party will also start plans to improve their livelihood. He said, ‘We will make every effort to help the silk handloom weavers of the state. Elections to be held in Tamil Nadu in 2026

Assembly elections are due next year in Tamil Nadu. This time the BJP has aligned with AIADMK. On the other hand there is an alliance of DMK and Congress, which is in power. The DMK alliance won all seats in the Lok Sabha elections held last year.

In 2021, AIADMK aligned with BJP and won only 75 seats. The DMK and the Congress alliance had dropped him out of power. In the 2019 and 2024 general elections, there was a similar defeat. BJP contested 28 seats in these 2 elections and did not win a single seat.

Palaniswami on alliance: Tamil Nadu’s main opposition party All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) General Secretary of Adapadi, Palaniswami, on Wednesday (March 26, 2025), clearly refused to say whether his party would combine with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections. However, he said that alliances are formed only at the time of elections.

The speculation of the electoral alliance has intensified after Palaniswami met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday. Palaniswami told reporters in New Delhi about the meeting with Shah with party leaders on Tuesday that his party had informed the Union Minister of many issues before Tamil Nadu. He said, ‘We have urged to release the funds soon, because it is being delayed’.

‘Tamil Nadu is following two-language policy continuously’
The former Chief Minister said that he demanded the central government to release the pending funds for Tamil Nadu under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and Schemes (SSA). He said, ‘Tamil Nadu is following two-language policy continuously and it should be continued. Also, the proposed delimitation of parliamentary constituencies should be made in such a way that Tamil Nadu does not adversely affect ‘.

Palaniswami said that the Godavari-Cavery River Joint Scheme should be implemented rapidly and funds should be released for the Nadantai Vajhi Kaveri scheme. The Center should not allow the construction of the Mekeedu Dam on the Cauvery river and should work as per the order of the Supreme Court.

‘Decision on coalition will be held at the time of election’
Expressing surprise when the AIADMK leader met Shah’s meeting with Shah and the possibility of an election alliance with the BJP, asked if the election had been announced. He questioned the need to answer in ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on the question of forming an alliance. He said that the decision on the alliance will be taken at the time of elections.

The AIADMK leader asked the dialogues to remember the time of the announcement of the alliance in the last elections whether it is the 2019 Lok Sabha elections or the 2021 assembly elections. Both AIADMK and BJP participated in both elections as partners. He said, ‘Alliances change according to the demand for circumstances and they are different from ideology and policies, which are permanent’.
