Why Late Night Studying Is Bad For Exams: As exams approach, the pressure on students to complete the entire syllabus and do as much revision as possible increases. In such a situation, many students stay awake all night and start studying. They feel that by reducing sleep by a few hours, extra time can be found for studies. Especially when the syllabus is incomplete, staying up all night studying may seem like an easy way to prepare for the exam. But this habit can cause harm instead of benefit.

Studying a few more hours at night does not necessarily mean that performance in exams will be better. Lack of sleep can affect memory, concentration and ability to think logically. The result of this may be that the student may have difficulty in remembering the information which he had memorized well earlier during the examination. Dr. Vaishali Bharambe, founder, counselor and medical educator of VB Anatomy Academy, told HT Lifestyle that skipping sleep to study during exams is not the right strategy. This can have an adverse effect on the hard work of the students.

Why can studying by staying awake all night cause harm?

During exam time, students often stay up all night to cover more chapters, memorize things and complete revision. At first glance it seems that this is providing some extra hours for studies. But lack of sleep can have a direct impact on the way the brain works. According to Dr. Bharambe, it has been repeatedly revealed in science that lack of sleep reduces the ability to learn. Not getting enough sleep affects memory, concentration and logical thinking. Students can definitely study for more hours at night, but at that time the brain’s ability to understand and remember new information may become weak.

That is, just sitting with a book for a longer time does not mean learning more or getting better marks in the exam. Due to lack of sleep, there may be difficulty in remembering previously memorized information while taking the exam.

Read this also – Period pain can be as severe as a heart attack

There may be difficulty in understanding questions in the exam

The effect of lack of sleep is not limited to memory only. Due to weak concentration, it may be difficult for students to understand the exam questions properly. Apart from this, there may also be difficulty in writing the answers correctly and avoiding small mistakes. Due to affected logical thinking, it may be difficult to solve case based or practical questions. The student may also face difficulty in connecting the concepts he has studied in class to a new question or problem.

Know the big disadvantages"/>

In such a situation, even if a student stays awake all night and reads some additional chapters or solves previous years’ question papers, due to lack of sleep it may be difficult to present his/her preparation properly in the examination hall.

Why is sleep important for body and mind?

Sleep is not just a time to rest the body. Dr. Bharambe calls it a biological process necessary for the body to function in a healthy manner. During good and adequate sleep, the brain recovers itself and concentration improves. During sleep, the hormonal balance in the body is also restored and the process of cellular repair continues. Adequate sleep also helps in taking better decisions, thinking properly and remaining emotionally stable.

Continuous lack of sleep can increase other problems

Not getting enough sleep for a long time can affect many parts of the body and mental health. According to experts, continuous lack of sleep can increase the risk of anxiety, headache and depression. Along with this, the body’s immunity can also become weak. The impact of these problems may be felt more at the time of examination. Due to anxiety, it can be difficult to keep yourself calm before the exam. Having a headache can make it difficult to concentrate and write for a long time during an exam. At the same time, due to weak immunity, the risk of falling ill around the examination can also increase.
