Anthropic launched Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on June 9, 2026. However, just three days after the launch, on the night of June 12, citing national security, the US government directed the company to immediately stop the access of any foreign citizen to these models. The order also said that this ban will also apply to foreign citizens living in America and even to Anthropic’s own foreign employees.

Anthropic said that since it could not identify which users were foreign nationals and which were not, it closed both models to everyone. The remaining Claude models of the company are still in operation.

Fear of jailbreak – Anthropic told misunderstanding

The US government says that a company had claimed that it had jailbroken the Fable 5. Jailbreaking means getting the information from AI which it normally refuses to give. For example, if you ask an AI how to make a bomb, it will refuse, but through jailbreak it is tricked in such a way that it gives out information which it should not.

Fable 5 can be used for cyber and chemical weapons

The US government feared that Fable 5 could be used to obtain information about cyber attacks, biological or chemical weapons. However, Anthropic refuted this claim. The company says that it saw the government demo and found that this jailbreak is very limited and is not going to pose a widespread threat. Anthropic said in its statement that we believe this is a misunderstanding and we are trying to restore access as soon as possible. This is the first time that the US government has banned the live model of an AI company by bringing it under export control. Till now such rules were imposed on chips and hardware, but now AI software has also come under its purview. This is being considered a major turning point in the history of AI regulation.
