In the year 1570, Emperor Akbar returned to Agra from Patan city of Punjab and traveled to several places. During this time, he stayed in the hospitality of local Hakimas in Deepalpur and Lahore. Akbar stayed here for two-three days and enjoyed the feast and then reached Ajmer via Hisar. In Ajmer, he spent a few days at the dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti and moved towards Sikri.

According to the book Glimpse of Indian History, Akbar Sheikh Salim Chishti’s house after reaching Sikri. This was a unique example of that time when an emperor makes a saint’s house his residence. According to Abul Fazal, Akbar’s sons were born in Sikri, which made him look more dear to this place. The emperor ordered that Sikri should be decorated with royal splendor. As a result, a grand palace, stone boundary wall, school, bathroom and market were constructed here. In a few years, Sikri became a rich city, which became famous as Fatehpur Sikri.

Where did Akbar spend most of the time of life?

In these years, Akbar spent most of life’s time among hunting, feasts and courtiers. The habit of playing Chaupar kept him busy with the women and courtiers of Haram for a long time. Sometimes the defaulters of the courtiers forced them to take strict action. In 1572, the rebellion of Mirzas in Gujarat and the activities of Mirza Hakim, the ruler of Kabul, worried Akbar. He sent forces towards Nagarkot and Kabul and prepared for the Gujarat campaign himself.

When did a new turn come under Akbar’s reign

Meanwhile, a Begum of Akbar’s harem in Ajmer gave birth to a son in September 1572. This child was named Danial. The emperor ordered that after a month, Danial should be handed over to King Bharmal of Amer for rationalization.

The establishment of Fatehpur Sikri and the birth of Danial gave a new twist to Akbar’s reign. While on the one hand he gave a grand appearance to his capital, on the other hand he also made military preparations to face the challenges of Gujarat and Kabul.

In the year 1574, Akbar established a department called Maktabkhana in Fatehpur Sikri. The issue of this department was to translate Sanskrit texts into Persian. For this, a joint team of Hindu scholars and Muslim translators was formed. It is worth noting that Mullah Abdul Qadir Badauni, who was famous for staunch ideas. He was also included in this work. Fundamentalists like Badaunni consider it not only Akbar but also to consider themselves. However, this process introduced Akbar to texts like Ramayana and Mahabharata, which led to a widespread change in his religious thinking. Abraham Irali, in his book ‘Emperors of the Picock Thron: The Saga of the Great Mughals’, cited Akbar’s contemporary historian Mulla Abd-ul-Kadir Badayuni (1540-1615), writing that Akbar was influenced by Hindu traditions.

Akbar’s mind leaned towards distance from non -violence and living killing from Hindu teachings such as Purushottam and Devi. He ordered that meat should not be eaten on certain days and festivals of the year. On Sunday, eating meat was banned in the entire state. Jeeva murder was prohibited for 18 days starting from Sawan month and Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. Gradually, Akbar declared so much fasting day that the subjects started spending half the time of the year without meat. Badauni writes that Akbar wanted that this feeling should be deep in his subjects that eating meat is not necessary.

Surya worship and influence of Hindu traditions
In Hijri 991 (1583 AD), Akbar made Surya Puja a part of the court. He ordered that four times a day – morning, midday, evening and midnight – sun should be worshiped. Akbar started chanting 1000 names of the Sun daily. He started applying tilak on the frontal like Hindus. He converted mosques and prayers into stores and Hindu style worship sites. This change started to make the courtiers and the mullahs. Badauni taunted and wrote that Akbar wants to run the religion on his own will.

Bhandare and service for both Hindu-Muslim
Akbar made three places near Fatehpur Sikri to increase social goodwill, which is as follows:

Dharmapura – Where Hindus would be served food.

Khairpura – Where there was a system for poor Muslims.

Jogipura – Where food and yoga practice were arranged for the Jogis.

Jogis taught Akbar the method of making yoga, chemistry and gold. Akbar was so impressed by them that he reduced the time spent in the harem, made the food and drink distance from meat.

Criticism of Badauni and Akbar’s beliefs
Badauni made sharp satire on Akbar’s religious policies. He wrote that Akbar is getting away from Islam by following Surya Puja, Tilak and Hindu traditions, but Akbar’s attitude was different. He was building a new religious system (Deen-e-Ilahi) by combining the essence of all religions. He was convinced that the human soul could take rebirth and longevity is possible with yoga and practice.

The identity of Agra is not limited to the Taj Mahal. Fatehpur Sikri is also an important part of history here. Sometimes it used to be the capital of the Mughals and today UNESCO is famous as the World Heritage Site. The Buland Darwaza here is the most prominent attraction, which is included in the list of every tourist coming to Agra. Akbar won Gujarat on 2 September. The Mughal Emperor Akbar captured Gujarat in 1573, making it part of the Mughal Empire.

In the year 1602 AD, Emperor Akbar built a high door in memory of the victory over Gujarat. It took about 12 years to complete. This door made of red sandstone has a glimpse of Hindu and Persian architecture. The verses of the Quran and the biblical rows are engraved on the door columns, which also make it a symbol of religious tolerance.

Elevated door architecture
The height of the elevated door is 53.63 meters. Its width is 35 meters. 42 stairs made to reach the gate, this door opens directly towards Jama Masjid and courtyard. From such a height, the entire Fatehpur city and surrounding views are seen.

Why is the high door special?
It is one of the highest doors in the world. Akbar’s religious vision and the superiority of art. Even after 400 years, its strength and grandeur surprises tourists. The confluence of history, culture and architecture makes it special.

How to reach Fatehpur Sikri?
The distance from Agra to Fatehpur Sikri is about 47 kilometers. To go here, it can be easily accessible from Agra with the help of cab or auto. Bus facility is also available to Buland Darwaza.

Akbar’s biography
Akbar’s birth on 15 October 1542 is currently located in Sindh province of Pakistan. Akbar was the greatest of the Mughal emperors of India. He ruled from 1556 to 1605 and expanded Mughal power in most parts of the Indian subcontinent. To maintain the unity of his empire, Akbar adopted such programs that won loyalty to the non-Muslim population of his state. They improved their central administration and strengthened it and also mixed their financial systems together and included tax depositing processes.
