How Lifestyle Affects Male Fertility: Fertility rates are continuously falling across the world. Today the situation is that in almost two-thirds of the countries of the world it has gone below the replacement level. According to Rachel Levy, professor of developmental and reproductive biology at the Faculty of Medicine of Sorbonne University, “Fertility has become not just an individual but a public health issue. 1 in 6 people are struggling with infertility.”

Important role of lifestyle

Sperm concentration in men has almost halved in the last 50 years. Along with environmental reasons, lifestyle factors are also playing a big role behind this, among which obesity and poor diet are the main ones. At the annual event of the Institut Benjamin Delsarte, held in Paris on January 31, 2025, Rachel Levy explained how changeable habits affect infertility and how good nutrition has the potential to improve fertility.

Research has revealed that there is a deep relationship between body mass index (BMI), diet and sperm quality. As BMI increases, fertility rates are declining across the world. In men undergoing medically assisted reproduction, overweight and obesity increase the risk of oligozoospermia and azoospermia, which reduce the chances of pregnancy and live birth.

How to maintain diet?

Diet directly affects the process of sperm formation. Many studies have revealed that adopting a Mediterranean diet improves sperm quality and fertility. Not only this, the father’s diet before conception can also affect the DNA methylation of sperm, which affects the development of the fetus.

Hormonal imbalance, oxidative stress, inflammation and epigenetic changes pose both risks and opportunities for improvement. The good thing is that in some cases these effects can also be reversed. A study found that regular physical activity and a balanced diet before conception improved metabolic and hormonal status, reduced sperm DNA damage and improved the antioxidant capacity of semen.

What to eat to increase fertility?

The Mediterranean diet has been most studied for reproductive health. It includes green leafy vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats. Vegetables like spinach, kale, quinoa and oats, fish-eggs, pulses, avocado, nuts and olive oil are considered beneficial for fertility.

What things to avoid?

Too much processed food, refined sugar, excessive caffeine and alcohol can disturb the hormonal balance. Consuming trans fat and too much fried food also increases swelling.

Experts’ advice

Along with nutrition, adequate water, regular light exercise and reducing stress are also important. If you are facing difficulty in conceiving for a long time or have problems like PCOS, thyroid, then taking advice from a fertility specialist and nutritionist can be beneficial.

A three -day program was held in Delhi on the centenary year of RSS. On the last day, Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat gave his views on the population. He said in clear terms that the population can be a burden for a country and opportunity. Now it depends on how we handle it. He said another important thing. Mohan Bhagwat said that if the number of children of families in a society is less than three, then gradually the existence of that society is in danger.

That is, along with population control, such a population is also necessary, which can keep the society and the country in balance. Now there is a need to understand here that if every man starts producing three children, then how much will the population of the country be and what is in reality the fertility rate in the country? Let’s understand this.

India’s population

India has become the most populous country in the world. Leaving China behind, now the population of India has exceeded 1.43 billion. In such a situation, whenever there is talk of three children in the country, then the question arises that what can be its effect on the population of India. Actually, the scale of growing or decreasing population is measured by fertility rate. Fertility rate means how many children give birth to a average during their lifetime.

How much fertility rate is there in the country

Earlier, fertility rates in India used to be very high. In the 1950s, a woman produced four to five children on an average. But over time, this number gradually decreased. According to the latest figures, India’s fertility rate has come at around 2.0. The easy way to understand this is that if the fertility rate falls below 2.1, then it is believed that the population will no longer grow rapidly, but gradually it will start getting stable. This is the situation in India at this time.

What can be the situation after three children

If then the thinking of three children becomes common among people, then the fertility rate will reach above 2.1. As soon as this happens, the speed of the population will start growing again. This will directly affect the resources of the country. Already, there is a lot of pressure in areas like education, health and employment, in such a situation, if the population increases, then the situation can be more difficult. At present, the fertility rates in many states of South India like Kerala and Tamil Nadu have reached 1.6 to 1.7. That is, the population there has become stable, but can also decrease in the coming time.

Which states are increasing population

On the contrary, the fertility rate in states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh is still higher. If we look at Bihar’s figure, it is about 2.9 and about 2.4 in Uttar Pradesh. These are the states that are carrying forward the total population of India. In big cities, people are now moving towards one or two children. In such a situation, if the trend of three children started again on a large scale, then the pressure of the population will once again grow rapidly and again the population can become a burden.
