The petition of the parents of late Ashok Chakra winner Major Mohit Sharma was heard in the Delhi High Court. The family had demanded in their petition that the release of the film Dhurandhar be banned, as they suspect that the film is inspired by their son’s life and may present a wrong image of him.

While hearing the case in Delhi High Court, Justice Sachin Dutta asked the petitioner’s lawyer how it was proved that the film is based on the life of Major Mohit Sharma, to which the lawyer said that it appears so from the trailer and promotional content of the film. He also cited the reactions of the audience and critics on social media in which the film’s connection with Major Sharma is being linked.

CBFC called the film completely fictional
During the hearing of the case, Delhi High Court questioned what exactly are the similarities and whether the story clearly matches his life. Meanwhile, the lawyer appearing for the Central Government said that the work of certification of the film is currently going on in CBFC. The committee has seen the film and in its opinion it is completely fictional and not based on the life of any person. He said that the formalities are underway and if needed, the film can also be sent to the Army.

High Court gave suggestion
Delhi High Court, while hearing the case, also suggested that the matter is sensitive, hence it would be better to send it to the Army. Major Sharma’s family also demanded a private screening of the film so that they could see for themselves what was shown in the film. The lawyer on behalf of the film producers argued that this petition has been filed in haste. Only the trailer of the film has been released and it would not be appropriate to impose any kind of restriction at this stage. He clearly said that the film has nothing to do with Major Mohit Sharma.

Delhi High Court order
While hearing the case, Delhi High Court said that the certification of the film is also pending with CBFC and it will take the final decision. While disposing of the petition, the court directed that CBFC should seriously listen to the concerns of Major Sharma’s family and pay attention to their views.

This is an official clarification.” He had further said, “I assure you that if we make a biopic on Mohit sir in the future, we will do it after full consultation with his family, and thus honor his sacrifice for the nation and the legacy he left for all of us.”
