Union Budget 2026-27: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is going to present the Union Budget on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at 11 am. In such a situation, the eyes of millions of investors and taxpayers of the country are fixed on this budget, because the relief provided by it will have a direct impact on their pockets. This will be Nirmala Sitharaman’s ninth consecutive full-time budget and she will present the budget for the first time on Sunday.

From middle class to salaried class, from farmers to women, all sections have great expectations regarding the Union Budget.

What are the expectations from the budget?

Property and Home Loan

On one hand, while property prices are increasing and the loan burden on people has also increased, home buyers are demanding tax relief. Their main demand is to increase the tax exemption on home loans. At present, the limit of exemption on interest under Section 24(b) of the Income Tax Act is Rs 2 lakh, which was fixed several years ago and is considered inadequate in the current circumstances.

Apart from this, Pranav Kumar, Founder and CEO of Plus Cash, says that in Budget 2026-27, emphasis can be laid on promoting tax saving and long term investment. In this, it is expected to increase the standard deduction, simplify the tax slab, provide additional relief related to housing loan and insurance.

Health

According to a report by Bajaj Broking, the scope of health services in the country is continuously increasing and it can be further expanded in Budget 2026. Under this, the scope of health insurance schemes can be expanded to cover more people and for long-term treatment.

However, the report also warns that while on one hand this will give a positive boost to the health sector, on the other hand, providing services at government rates may put pressure on the profits of private hospitals.

capital expenditure

Broking firm Anand Rathi believes that during the financial year 2026-27, the government will proceed on the path of existing reforms and there is little possibility of any major or surprising decision in the budget. According to the firm, in the budget the government can increase capital expenditure (capex) by about 13 percent on an annual basis to Rs 12.6 trillion. At the same time, the Capex-to-GDP ratio is estimated to be around 3.2 percent.

It is noteworthy that in the Economic Survey report presented a day earlier on Thursday, India’s GDP growth rate for the financial year 2026-27 has been estimated to be in the range of 6.8 percent to 7.2 percent. Furthermore, the real average domestic product (GDP) growth rate for FY 2026 is estimated at 7.4 percent and gross value added (GVA) at 7.3 percent.

Despite global adverse conditions, India has been maintained on a high growth path. We have improved our potential GDP growth rate to seven percent. According to the Economic Survey, the Indian economy has maintained strong momentum even amidst global uncertainties. In the review, India’s GDP growth rate for the next financial year is estimated to be in the range of 6.8 percent to 7.2 percent.

According to the estimates of the National Statistical Office (NSO), the Indian economy has grown at the rate of 7.4 percent in the current financial year.
Economic Survey 2025-26: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Economic Survey in Parliament before the Budget 2026-27 to be presented on February 1. The Economic Survey 2025-26 tabled in Parliament has made a detailed assessment of the functioning of the government during the last one year, the pace of the country’s economy and the major challenges facing it.

The impact of policy reforms made in recent years has been taken into account in the economic growth projections. Due to this, the medium term growth potential of the economy has reached close to seven percent. It said risks to growth remain broadly balanced, given the dominant role of domestic factors and strengthening macroeconomic stability.

According to news agency PTI, in the annual report presented on the performance of the country’s economic growth, it has been said that the survey has estimated that India’s GDP growth rate in the financial year 2027 can remain in the range of 6.8 percent to 7.2 percent, which points towards strong economic fundamentals and stable growth.

economic survey before budget

This economic survey has been presented at a time when the Union Budget is to be presented soon and the government is going to announce important policy decisions for the next financial year. In the context of the economy facing challenges amid global uncertainties, this survey not only assesses the current situation for the government, but will also play an important role in deciding the direction of micro-economic management and policy priorities.

The Economic Survey said that inflation is likely to remain under control in the coming year also due to improvement in supply situation and gradually visible impact of rationalization of GST rates. The government estimates that these factors will limit pressure on prices and consumers will continue to get relief.

What was said in the Economic Survey?

The rapid progress of India’s electronics sector has also been highlighted in the survey. While the electronics sector was India’s seventh largest export category in FY22, by FY25 it has become the third largest and fastest growing export category. Electronics exports grew to $22.2 billion in the first half of FY26, making the sector soon poised to become India’s second largest export sector.

According to the report, this boom in the electronics sector has come due to the rapid growth in domestic production and exports, which has been led by mobile manufacturing. The production value of mobile phones was around Rs 18,000 crore in FY15, which has increased to Rs 5.45 lakh crore by FY25. This is an increase of almost 30 times, which shows the strength of India’s manufacturing capacity and ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Nirmala Sitharaman on Global Challenges: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said during the Kautilya Economic Conference that today we have not only a challenge to handle global uncertainties, but it is also necessary to face the depth of imbalance associated with trade, finance and energy. However, he said that India has focused on the target of achieving eight percent GDP growth. The Finance Minister stressed that the foundation of the global system is changing and it is not only temporary disruption, but a structural change. India’s capacity is in a strong position to bear and overcome external shocks even among increasing geopolitical tensions.

Example of global leadership G20

Nirmala Sitharaman said that such conferences have given direction to India’s policy thinking and strategy, and its impact has also shown on global forums. He described the G20 summit of 2023 as an excellent example of India’s global leadership capacity.

The Union Finance Minister further said that Prime Minister Modi has kept a two-track approach to achieve India’s prosperity. First, the target to make India a developed India until 2047; And second, the path to reach that goal through Atmanirbhar Bharat.

The Finance Minister said that today’s world is struggling with deep imbalances- trade imbalance has hollowed out industries in some countries, financial imbalance has denied the real economy of investment and energy imbalance has made some societies depend on expensive imports. These imbalances have now become the permanent reality of the global system. In such a situation, the challenge is not only to handle uncertainty, but to face these imbalances firmly.

Capital expenditure increased

He said that private sector investment opportunities have started appearing in India and interest in public-private participation (PPP) projects is increasing again. He stressed that there has been a significant increase in public expenditure in the last five years and the government is committed to continue capital expenditure.

The Finance Minister also informed that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi increased the expenditure on infrastructure to maintain economic pace during the Kovid-19 epidemic. The government’s commitment to capital expenditure is not only increased, but has now become stable. Sitharaman said that the government has set a target of Rs 11.21 lakh crore for the total capital expenditure for 2025-26 (April-March). In the first four months of the current financial year, capital expenditure has increased by 33 percent to Rs 3.47 lakh crore on an annual basis.

Indian currency: For the last few months, where on one side there is a lot of ups and downs in the stock market, on the other hand there was a big decline in the rupee and it has crossed the historic 88 level. However, RBI’s steps and GST reforms definitely helped them to get up by limiting the business of rupee. Despite this, the Indian currency remains weak in front of the dollar strength.

Why is the rupee falling?

Amidst all this, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has given a big statement in view of the fall in the price of the rupee. He said that the government is closely monitored by the fall of the rupee and exports are being affected very badly. The Finance Minister further said that continuous efforts are being made to reduce the impact of the fall in the rupee. In fact, the biggest reason for the biggest concern is that this year, the rupee has fallen by more than four percent so far, that is, it has come down by about Rs 3.50 from its level.

Nirmala Sitharaman said that due to the strength of the dollar, not only this decline is being seen in Indian currency, but the currency of the rest of the countries has also been badly affected. Along with this, the Union Finance Minister has also made it clear that due to the American tariff, work is being done by the concerned ministry and departments to reduce its impact on Indian businessmen and exporters.

This year breaks up to four percent

On the last trading day of last week i.e. on Friday, the rupee came to a standstill at 88.09 levels in the interbank foreign currency exchange market. Before that, on September 2, the rupee reached the historic level and reached Rs 88.15 per dollar.

Obviously, many steps have been taken by the Reserve Bank to prevent this decline in the rupee and a sharp eye. It is believed that after the GST reform, some more big steps can be taken in the future from the Central Bank to boost the economy and support the rupee, including the rate cut.

GST Reform: Prior to the festivals, the Modi government has given great relief to the general public. The government has made common items cheaper by changing the GST slab. This decision will provide relief in the expenses of common people on the occasion of Durga Puja, Diwali and Chhath. The 56th meeting of the GST Council was held in Delhi on Wednesday, in which many important proposals were approved. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that now only two GST slabs will remain- 5 percent and 18 percent. With this, slabs of 12 percent and 28 percent have been abolished.

Prime Minister Narendra, while addressing the winners of the National Teacher Award 2025 on Thursday, said that this comprehensive improvement in the GST structure will give the country a “double dose of support and development”. He called it a reform of the next generation for India’s progress in the 21st century. During this, he told that these reforms will be applicable from 22 September.

Prime Minister Modi told the reason

The Prime Minister said that these reforms will be applicable from September 22. He said, “The first generation of improvement will apply on the first day of Navratri, because all these things are related to mother power.” He also clarified that without making timely changes, the country cannot find a proper place in global conditions.

PM Modi shared the history of GST reforms and said that when GST came into force eight years ago, it was a dream of decades. He described it as one of the biggest economic reforms of independent India and said that along with strengthening the economy of the country, it will also give relief in the pockets of the common people. Citing the GST Council meeting, the Prime Minister said that now most of the daily use items will be at the rate of 5 percent, while luxury and harmful products will be specially applicable to 40 percent. He said that the new system will be more simple and transparent than before.

PM Modi targeted opposition

Taking a dig at the opposition, Prime Minister Modi said that earlier during the Congress rule, heavy taxes were imposed on domestic consumption basic goods, but the current government has removed these flaws for the convenience of the common man. He also said that this reform will be beneficial for the country’s economic strength and the general public, and before Diwali and Chhath Puja, the countrymen will get double the gift of happiness.

Nirmala sitharaman on us tarifs: A new challenge has arisen in front of the Indian industry due to US President Donald Trump imposing 50% tariffs on Indian products. The government is making a strategy at many levels about this. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met the delegation of exporters and assured that the government is standing firmly with him in this difficult time. He said that it is the priority of the government to remove the concerns of exporters.

Serious government on tariff

Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO) S.C. The delegation led by Ralhan discussed the challenges related to the sudden increase in the US tariff with the Finance Minister. Ralhan said that high fees are having a direct impact on market access, competition capacity and employment generation. He demanded the government to take quick and planned policy steps.

Government standing firmly with exporters

The statement issued by Fio said that the Finance Minister has assured that the government is fully committed to solve all the problems of exporters. He said that the government will take all possible steps to protect the interests of the exporting community.

Sitharaman appealed to the industry to ensure security of employees despite global challenges. He also said that the government will give detailed support to exporters to maintain the speed of growth and India’s stability in international trade.

Which areas are the biggest impact

The most impact of this US fee, which came into effect from Wednesday, is expected to have the most impact on labor-dominated areas like shrimp, apparel, diamonds, shoes and shoes and jewelery. In these areas, pressure on both export and employment generation may increase.
