Pakistan seems to be stuck in a bad phase of economic recession. In September 2025, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) saw an increase of 5.6 percent on a year-on-year basis. Rising food inflation has led to reduction in consumption of meat and expensive items like tomatoes. People have expressed anger over the government’s failure to control food inflation, which has made their livelihood difficult.

State Bank of Pakistan’s estimate failed

Experts estimate that the overall inflation figures will be higher than the estimates of the Islamabad government and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). It is noteworthy that Pakistan Finance Minister Mohammad Aurangzeb had said that the government is committed to price stability. However, the report said that people claimed that the government measures were only symbolic, which did not stop overcharging.

Pakistan’s economy affected by devastating floods

The Islamabad government has also blamed the floods for low agricultural production and skyrocketing prices of food items. Vegetable prices soar: As soon as the monsoon starts in the country, the prices of vegetables are now starting to climb the sky. The prices from tomatoes to lemon are now teasing people. The tomato, which was selling Rs 20 per kg in June, is now being sold red more than double than doubled than before.

Their arrival in other small mandis including Azadpur Mandi of the national capital Delhi has reduced. Due to the disrupting rains in the supply of vegetables from Karnataka to Uttarakhand and Himachal, its prices have jumped from thirty percent to 140-150 percent.

How many prices have increased?

The highest bounce in the price is being seen in green vegetables. The variety of green vegetables has started selling in the market from Rs 120 to Rs 160 per kg. At the same time, the price of cauliflower has also increased to Rs 160 per kg in just one fortnight. Apart from this, the prices of gourd, lady finger, trumpet and cabbage have also climbed up to fifty percent.

If the vegetable traders working in the market are to be believed, then the biggest reason behind the increased price in the mandi of Azadpur is to affect the arrival of tomatoes and green vegetables. They say that due to heavy rains in Uttarakhand, a lot of vegetables have been damaged.

The shadow of rain on the supply of vegetables

In the national capital Delhi, where other vegetables including tomatoes and capsicum reach from Karnataka, tomatoes, cabbage and mother are supplied from Himachal Pradesh. Apart from this, there is a large amount of supply of cauliflower, kundari, green chilli and peas from Uttarakhand. But due to rain, the supply of these vegetables has been badly interrupted.
