There has been a sharp reaction in New Zealand politics regarding the recently concluded Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and New Zealand. The country’s Foreign Minister and leader of the New Zealand First Party, Winston Peters, has strongly opposed this agreement, calling it ‘neither free nor fair’. He warned that the agreement was a ‘bad deal’ for New Zealand, in which the country had given too many concessions but received no concrete benefits in return.

‘Bad deal for New Zealand’
In a detailed post on social media platform X, Winston Peters said his party New Zealand First “regretfully opposes” the deal. They allege that in this FTA, serious concessions have been given on the immigration and investment front, while in return New Zealand did not get the expected benefits, especially in its major export sectors.

Allegations of loss to dairy farmers
Referring specifically to the dairy sector, Peters said that this agreement is not in the interests of New Zealand farmers. ‘This is not a good deal for New Zealand farmers and it is impossible to justify to our rural communities,’ he said.

More concessions on immigration, less benefits
According to Peters, New Zealand has given excessive concessions in the provisions related to immigration in the India-New Zealand FTA. He said that New Zealanders are not getting enough benefits from this agreement, especially in important sectors like dairy.

business expected to double
Despite Peters’ criticism, the governments of India and New Zealand have described this agreement as historic. Both countries say that this FTA can help in doubling bilateral trade in the next five years. According to the New Zealand government, under this agreement, duties will be eliminated or reduced on 95 percent of New Zealand’s exports to India, of which more than half of the products will become duty-free from day one. In return, all Indian products will get duty-free access to the New Zealand market. New Zealand has also committed to invest about 20 billion dollars in India in the next 15 years, which is being considered a big step in terms of economic relations between the two countries.

Prime Minister Lakson said ‘an agreement with great benefits’
New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luckson defended this FTA, saying that it would provide wide-ranging and significant benefits. He said in the statement, ‘India’s vast size and rapid economic growth creates huge opportunities for jobs, exports and economic growth for New Zealand.’ The agreement also fulfills the promise made by Laxman’s National Party in the 2022 elections to finalize an FTA with India in its first term.

Differences exposed in coalition government
Winston Peters’ sharp reaction has made it clear that there are deep differences within the ruling coalition regarding the India-New Zealand FTA. In the coming days, this issue may become more heated in the domestic politics of New Zealand.

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said on Monday (October 6) that the world is going through a period of major changes and rising competition at this time. He warned that ‘everything used as a weapon’ is increasing ‘and at such a time India will have to move forward by strengthening its strategy. Emphasizing the ‘Nebarhood First’ policy, he said that India will have to become a ‘go-to option’ in this entire subcontinent in case of any crisis.

Increasing instability and competition in the world
Jaishankar said that today the spirit against globalization is increasing in many societies of the world. Older equations of business are changing due to the instability of tariffs. He indirectly made this statement indicating US President Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ policy. The US has recently imposed many big tariffs on India, which has increased trade tension between the two countries.

India will have to become a reliable option in crisis
Jaishankar said, India will have to become the most trusted option in this subcontinent in the event of any crisis. He said that India would have to be a part of a large strategic block to maintain global balance. He described the current time as a period of making weapons.

Instability in neighboring countries, challenge before India
He said that India’s neighborhood is in a very critical state at this time. Relationships with Pakistan are constantly tense, while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal have also seen political instability and protests in recent months. Jaishankar said that in such an environment, India will have to move forward keeping its policies strong.

Agreement with America, but no compromise on ‘red line’
Jaishankar bluntly said that India will make any business agreement with the US only when its ‘Red Lines’ ie Agriculture and Dairy sector is not allowed without any restriction of foreign goods. He said that the strategic loss that India had suffered from partition will now have to be filled.

India’s strategy for 2047
Speaking at the Aravali Summit organized on the subject of ‘India and the World Order: Preparaing for 2047’ at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Jaishankar said that India’s growth strength is demand, population and data. He said that we have to prepare our ideas, vocabulary and native for the 2047 journey so that India can play a leading role in the global system.

Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar gave detailed information on the current status of relations between India and America in KEC 2025. He said that at present there is disagreement between India and America over business issues. Jaishankar clarified that there is no final agreement between the two countries so far in the trade discussion, due to which the US has implemented some tariffs on India, which India has publicly united.

He said that another tariff has been implemented with energy sources from Russia. Jaishankar said that other countries, whose relations with Russia are more complex or challenging, have done this type of purchase. He said, “These issues need to be resolved and India is actively working on it.”

The story of Hana Ahmed Khan, a resident of Hyderabad, is heartbreaking. In June 2022, Hana was married to Mohammad Zainuddin Khan, an American citizen working in the Chicago Police. In February 2024, Hana went to America to live in Chicago with her husband, but there she faced emotional exploitation, physical harassment and mental torture there.

Hana has now requested External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar to intervene in this matter. They demand that they be provided the necessary visas to return to America, so that they can fight their case legally.

Husband left Hyderabad and went back to America
Hana claims that her husband brought her back to Hyderabad on 7 February 2025 on the pretext of Umrah and held her at the park hotel in Somajiguda. When Hana went to meet her parents, her husband vacated the hotel with her passport, green card, jewelery and other items and went back to America. After this incident, Hana lodged a complaint at the Panjaguda police station, under which an FIR was lodged.

All attempts to contact husband failed
For the last 6 months, Hana has been trying to contact her husband, but all her efforts have failed. He also sought help from the officials concerned in the US Embassy and Hyderabad, but did not get any concrete results.

Request for help from Ministry of External Affairs
Hana hopes that now the Ministry of External Affairs and American Embassy will help them, so that they can fight for their rights. No official statement has been received on this matter yet, but Hana says that she will make every effort for justice.

Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) spokesperson Amjadullah Khan has appealed to External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar to provide justice to Hana Ahmed Khan of Hyderabad.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said at the BRICS conference on Monday that economic policies should be fair and transparent in the global system. He stressed that these policies should be for the development and profit of all countries, so that equality will remain.

Fair and transparent economic policies are necessary
Jaishankar said in the virtual BRICS meeting that there should be fairness and transparency in the global trade system. He said that the purpose of economic behavior globally should be to ensure permanent and inclusive development for all, not only the benefit of some countries. At the summit organized by Brazilian President Lewis Eneasio Lula Da Silva, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar said that India believes that the method of international trade should be open, fair, clean and different discrimination. These rules should always be protected.

Follow collaborative and creative approach
He appealed to all countries to adopt a “creative and cooperative” approach. Jaishankar said that in the present time it is necessary to make global trade sustainable and durable so that the world’s economy can move forward stable. Jaishankar also said in his address that there will be no benefit from increasing obstacles in global trade and complex transactions. He urged BRICS countries to review the trade flow and present the example. He said that more obstacles will only harm business. He said, “Our aim should be more flexible, reliable, alternative and small supply peace so that any shock can be dealt with.”

Business deficit and solution needs
External Affairs Minister Jaishankar said that India’s largest trade deficit is with BRICS countries. He said that India is constantly trying for a time -bound solution. He hoped that in today’s meeting, important understanding will be made on this subject. He said, “The basis of the international trade system rests on openness, fairness, inclusion, equality and rule -based approaches, including special and discriminatory provisions for developing countries.”

Expressing displeasure over buying oil from Russia, the US has also imposed 25 percent of additional tariffs on Indian products. 25 tariffs are already applicable, so products from India to America will have to face a huge tariff of 50 percent from Wednesday. Amidst all this, the US Finance Minister hopes that India and America will definitely come together one day.

US Finance Minister Scott Besant, however, hoped that Indo-US relations would remain strong. He said that India is the largest democracy in the world and America is the largest economy. In the end we will come together.

Talks stuck on trade agreement
Besant clearly said that the trade agreement has not been reached yet. He alleged that India’s attitude has been “performing” so far. He said that India started talks soon after Independence Day. It was expected that the agreement would be reached by May or June. But India took very cautious and measuring steps. Besant also said that India has earned profits from Russian oil and this is a big reason for the dispute.

Statements on Trump-Modi’s relationship
Besant admitted that the relationship between the two countries is complicated. He said that there are very good relationship between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi at a high level, but the matter is not just about Russian oil. Besant further said that America has a huge trade deficit with India. He explained that when there is a conflict in business, the country with losses (America) is in profit. A country with surplus (India) should worry. India may be selling things to America but its own tariffs are very high.

What did Besant say on the rupee and dollar?
When asked whether the trade in the rupee by India is a matter of concern, he replied that the Indian rupee is at the lowest level against the dollar at this time. I worry about many things, but the rupee will be a reserve currency, it is not among them.

India’s answer and PM Modi’s attitude
New Delhi has made it clear that it will not bow down to American pressure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he will never compromise on the interests of farmers. According to a report by German newspaper Frankfurter Algemine Siteung (FAZ), PM Modi did not pick up four phone calls of President Donald Trump in recent weeks. The report said that this is a sign of both his anger and vigilance.
