According to the legend, when King Svet of Vidarbha went to the hereafter, he was very hungry. But there was nothing to eat. He asked Brahmadev why he was not being given food. Then Brahmadev said that you never donated food in your life.

After this, King Svet asked his dynasty to come in dreams and donate food. It is believed that Bhandare started since then. Therefore, every person must donate food or bhandara according to the commentary in his life.
