FSSAI New Health Supplement Rules: Ashwagandha has long been presented as a natural remedy, which is considered helpful in every problem from reducing stress to improving sleep. This old herb of Ayurveda has become a big part of the wellness industry today. But now a big decision has come out regarding this Ashwagandha, which has surprised both the consumers and the supplement manufacturing companies.

What is the matter?

FSSAI and AYUSH Ministry have banned the use of Ashwagandha leaves. Although this is not a complete ban, but a limited restriction. That means, the use of only its leaves and not the entire Ashwagandha plant has been banned. At the same time, the use of its root will continue as before. In the order issued on April 16, FSSAI has instructed the states to keep strict vigil. Along with this, it has also been said that if any company is found using Ashwagandha leaves or their extracts, then legal action should be taken against it. Apart from this, companies will now also have to clearly state which part of the plant has been used in their products.

Why was this decision taken?

Actually, this decision has been taken on the basis of scientific research. Research has found that Ashwagandha leaves contain substances called withanolides in large quantities, especially Vidiferin-A, which can have a significant effect on the body. According to experts, excess of these elements can cause damage to the liver, stomach related problems and even affect the nervous system.

Use of Ashwagandha is increasing rapidly

In view of this possible danger, the government has taken this step as a precaution. Especially at a time when the use of Ashwagandha is increasing rapidly and it is easily available in the market in the form of capsules, powder and drinks. On the other hand, Ashwagandha root is considered safe. This part has been used in Ayurveda for centuries and modern research also shows it to be safe when taken in the right quantity. Therefore, regulatory bodies have given permission to root based products.

What do experts believe?

Experts believe that this decision is part of the precautionary approach, that is, until it is proven completely safe, it is better to stay away from potentially risky elements. Dietitian Kanika Malhotra told Indian Express that ashwagandha helps the body deal with stress, improves sleep and helps increase energy, but traditionally it has been used only in the form of the root.

At the same time, dietician Garima Goyal says that this ban is beneficial for consumers, because now companies will have to clearly tell which part they are using. This will make it easier for people to understand what they are eating.
