This time US President Donald Trump is not participating in the G-20 summit to be held on 22-23 November in Johannesburg, South Africa. The White House said that the US representative will be present at the formal handover ceremony only on the last day of the conference. America is going to chair this summit.

White House spokeswoman Carolyn Levitt said in a press briefing on Thursday that President Trump and his team are angry with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent statements and comments. Levitt said, “The United States is not participating in the official G-20 talks in South Africa. I saw that the President of South Africa was using his language against America and the American President, which the President and his team did not like.”

Ramaphosa said this by sharing the video

Ramaphosa recently posted a video on his social media account, in which he said, “Boycott politics does not work. It is better to stay inside the G-20 tent than standing outside.” He also indicated in a press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa that despite the US notice, talks were still ongoing regarding some form of participation in the meeting.

Donald Trump had made this announcement

However, this month Donald Trump had announced that no American official would attend the G-20 conference to be held in Johannesburg. Trump cited alleged violence against white minority farmers in South Africa as the reason for this boycott.

South Africa rejects Trump’s claims

South Africa completely rejected Trump’s claims. President Ramaphosa said that this boycott of America would be equivalent to handing over his presidency to an ’empty chair’ at the end of the conference. This has created tension between the two countries even before the summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (Friday, November 21) left for Johannesburg, South Africa, where he will participate in the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit to be held from 21 to 23 November 2025. This conference is being hosted by South Africa and the special thing is that for the first time the G20 summit is going to be organized in the African continent. Also, this is the fourth consecutive time that the G20 conference is being held in the Global South.

Leaving for a visit on the invitation of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Prime Minister Modi said that this conference is important in many ways. He reminded that under India’s G20 presidency (2023), the African Union was given permanent membership of the G20 and now holding this summit in Africa further strengthens that historic step.

What is the theme of this year’s G20 conference?

The theme of this year’s G20 conference has been kept as ‘Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability’. This theme carries forward the continuity of the last two summits held in India and Brazil. PM Modi said that he will present India’s vision in the conference based on the thinking of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – One Earth, One Family, One Future.

PM Modi will meet people of Indian origin

During the conference, Prime Minister Modi will also attend the 6th IBSA (India-Brazil-South Africa) Summit. Here strategic cooperation, global challenges, economic partnership and development agenda will be discussed between the three countries.

A large number of people of Indian origin live in South Africa and PM Modi said that he is also eager to meet the Indian community there. This Indian diaspora is one of the largest Indian diaspora groups in the world.

US President Donald Trump made a big announcement on Friday (07 November) saying that no American government official will participate in the G20 summit to be held in South Africa this year. He cited the reason for this that the South African government is allegedly mistreating white farmers (Afrikaners). Trump called this move a ‘compulsion for justice’, while the South African administration termed his allegations as completely baseless and false.

Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social, “It is shameful that a prestigious event like the G20 is being hosted in a country that is treating its own citizens, especially white farmers, with injustice. Confiscating land and committing violence on them is a gross violation of human rights.”

Earlier it was decided that Vice President JD Vance would represent America in this summit in place of Trump, but now he too will not go. According to a senior Trump administration official, this decision has been taken after Trump’s direct approval.

US President Donald Trump posts, “It is a total disgrace that the G20 will be held in South Africa. Afrikaners (People who are descended from Dutch settlers, and also French and German immigrants) are being killed and slaughtered, and their land and farms are being illegally… pic.twitter.com/oUKxCZwgNl

South Africa retaliated

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa rejected Trump’s claims and said that this is a political propaganda, which is being spread to tarnish the image of the country. He said, “It has been three decades since apartheid ended in South Africa. Here all citizens have equal rights, and white citizens are still among the most prosperous classes of the country.”

Ramaphosa also claimed that Trump is repeatedly trying to mislead people through false figures and reports. At the same time, some African diplomats have described Trump’s statement as inciting racial politics.

Demand to remove South Africa from G20

Trump recently said in a speech in Miami that South Africa should be expelled from the G20 due to allegations of “human rights violations”. He said that until the atrocities against white farmers do not stop, America will not sit with this country on any global economic forum.

This dispute has come to the fore at a time when the G20 Summit 2025 is going to be held in Johannesburg in late November, in which the leaders of the world’s top economies are going to come together to discuss global development, climate crisis and geopolitical stability.

Understand the root of the dispute

The Trump administration has long accused the South African government of ignoring land grabs and violent attacks against white farmers. In the same year, the US government announced changes to its refugee program to give priority to white South Africans.

On the other hand, South Africa says that these attacks are not ethnic but criminal incidents which are being presented as an issue of apartheid. After this dispute, there is a possibility of further bitterness in the relations between the two countries before the G20 summit.
