In the evening of 17 September, eminent historian and writer Gajanan Bhaskar Mendale died of a heart attack. He was 77 years old and was famous for his research work on Maratha Emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Mehendale dedicated historical research for more than five decades and was counted among the most trusted experts in Maratha history. His funeral will be prepared on 18 September.

Mehendale’s research and contribution

Mehendale was unmarried and dedicated most of his life to the study of historical documents, evidence-based research and lectures. He worked deeply on Maratha Navy, Shivaji Maharaj’s war campaigns and the then administration.

Mehendle had knowledge of many languages ​​including Persian, Modi, English, French and German. He wrote books like “Shivcharitra” (Marathi), “Shivaji: Hiz Life and Times, Tipu Age Rieli Vaz and Maratha Navy”. He was associated with institutions like India History Amendment Board and Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute.

Education and working style

Born in 1947, Mendele did a post -graduation in Defense Studies from the University of Pune. His research was focused on the life and military operations of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, in which he analyzed primary sources like letters, records and contemporary documents.

Mehendale gave many lectures on Shivaji Maharaj and tried to bring out the less known aspects of his life. His working style was based on proof-based statements and intensive investigation of historical facts. In recent years, he was doing research and writing on Islam and Aurangzeb.

A wave of mourning in the historical world

There is a wave of mourning in the history and literature world with the death of Mendele. His contemporary historians and research institutes paid tribute to him and described his contribution as unique. His research on Maratha history is still considered authentic.

His books presented the Maratha Empire and the image of Shivaji Maharaj from a new perspective. Experts believe that Mendele’s absence will make a deep lack of historical research.
