Voting for general elections is taking place in Bangladesh today (12 February). A large crowd of people is being seen at the polling stations. People can vote till 4:30 pm on 12th February. In Bangladesh, a country with a population of approximately 17 crores, more than 12 crore people are eligible to vote. Voting is taking place in 299 out of 300 parliamentary seats in the country. A total of 1,981 candidates are in the fray.

Along with the elections, a referendum is also being held in Bangladesh on a complex 84-point reform package. This time the main contest is believed to be between Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its former ally Jamaat-e-Islami. Earlier, the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus had dissolved Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League last year and banned the party from contesting elections.

What did Mohammad Yunus say?
Counting of votes is expected to begin immediately after polling ends and the official results are likely to be declared tomorrow i.e. on 13th February. Mohammad Yunus has said that he will soon hand over power to the elected government. He has appealed to all political parties, candidates and concerned parties to maintain restraint, tolerance and democratic behavior during voting.

The political atmosphere in Bangladesh has become very tense before the general elections. In this election, which is going to be held for the first time after the change of power in the country, not only is the fight for power intense, but anti-India politics is also coming to the fore. After the ban on ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, the contest has changed into completely new political equations. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024, an interim government is working in the country under the leadership of Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammad Yunus. Now it is expected that Bangladesh will get a full-time Prime Minister after the elections.

Awami League banned, political equation changed
After the ban on Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League, it is certain that she will be out of the political arena. In such a situation, the electoral contest has been completely limited between the opposition forces. This change has also sparked a new debate regarding the direction of Bangladesh’s politics and relations with India.

BNP vs Jamaat-e-Islami
This time the main contest of the elections is believed to be between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by Tariq Rahman, son of former Prime Minister late Khaleda Zia, and the fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami. Jamaat-e-Islami’s political agenda has long revolved around minorities and opposition to India. At the same time, BNP has also never stood openly in support of India.

BNP has lead in survey, Tariq Rehman can become PM
BNP has been shown a clear lead in the survey conducted by Bangladesh’s leading newspaper Prothom Alo. According to the survey, BNP can get more than 200 seats, due to which the party can reach close to absolute majority. In such a situation, there is a possibility of Tariq Rahman, who returned from Britain after a long time, becoming the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Jamaat’s weak position, yet important role in opposition
The survey has also revealed that the position of Jamaat-e-Islami, known for its anti-India stance, does not appear to be strong. Jamaat, which is contesting the elections under the leadership of Shafiqur Rahman, is expected to get around 50 seats. However, it can play the role of an effective opposition in Parliament.

Mathematics of Parliament seats
There are a total of 350 seats in the Parliament of Bangladesh. Of these, people vote directly on 300 seats, while indirect elections take place on 50 seats. According to the survey, Bangladesh Jatiya Party may get about 3 seats, while the remaining seats are expected to go to independent candidates. Like India, the tenure of MPs in Bangladesh is also five years.

Yunus appeals on referendum and reform agenda
Meanwhile, the head of the interim government, Mohammad Yunus, has described the referendum as very important along with the general elections to be held on February 12. He has appealed to the countrymen to vote ‘yes’ in the referendum and support his proposed reform package.

Future will change with vote: Yunus
Addressing senior secretaries and top bureaucrats late on Monday night, Yunus said that if more votes are cast in favor of ‘Yes’ in the referendum, then the future of Bangladesh will move in a more positive direction. He claimed that this will help in removing the ‘misgovernance’ prevalent in the country.

Emphasis on 84-point reform package
The Yunus administration has been actively campaigning for the past several weeks in support of the complex 84-point reform package. The interim government believes that getting public approval in the referendum will pave the way for implementing administrative and political reforms.

The situation once again worsened in Guinea-Bissau, a small country in West Africa, on Wednesday (26 November 2025). There was chaos in the capital Bissau in the afternoon due to the sounds of loud firing and after some time the army announced that it had taken command of the entire country. According to the Army, all election related processes have been stopped immediately and all the international borders of the country have been closed. In this way a military coup took place in Guinea-Bissau.

Suddenly the sound of gunshots started being heard around the Rashtrapati Bhavan in Guinea-Bissau. Soldiers were deployed in the main areas of the city and huge barricades were installed on the roads. Many people started leaving the capital due to fear. Journalists say that the entire area of the Presidential Complex is under army siege and the situation remains very tense.

Where is President Embalo?

The biggest concern is that there is no trace of current President Umaro Sissoko Embalo. Even hours after the army took power, it was not clear whether they were safe or not. Because of this, even more unrest has arisen in the country and people are not able to understand in which direction the political situation of the country will go now.

Clash even before election results come out

Presidential and parliamentary elections were held in the country just a few days before the coup. The official results were to come on Thursday (27 November 2025), but both the ruling party and the opposition had claimed their respective victories. This is the same situation which was seen in the 2019 elections, when there was controversy for months regarding the results. This time the election process was in controversies from the beginning.

The Supreme Court barred the main opposition party PAIGC from contesting the elections, which the opposition called political pressure. President Embalo’s term ended in February, but he refused to step down. This had already raised serious questions on the credibility of the democratic process.

Guinea-Bissau’s old problem

This is not the first time that the army has taken power in Guinea-Bissau. The country has seen political turmoil several times since gaining independence in 1974. Four successful coups and several failed attempts testify to the fact that the political structure here is very weak. Reasons like corruption, poverty, organized crime and drug trafficking have continuously given rise to instability.

Also read: Massive fire in many residential towers of Hong Kong, 44 people died, 300 people missing

Sushila Karki: Former Nepal Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as an interim Prime Minister on Friday. President Ramchandra Paudel administered him the oath of office and secrecy at a special ceremony held at Sheetal Niwas. Vice President Ramsahay Yadav, Chief Justice Prakash Singh Rawat, government officials, army and security chiefs as well as members of the diplomatic community were present during this period.

Heads of both houses of Parliament did not attend the swearing -in ceremony of Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki. Despite being sent from Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Speaker of the House of Representatives Devraj Ghimire and the President of the Rashtriya Sabha Narayan Dahal boycotted the ceremony. Ghimire is an MP from CPN UML (Oli’s party), while Dahal CPN comes from the Maoist Center (Prachanda’s party). Both leaders are opposing the decision to dissolve Parliament. After taking oath, President Ramchandra Paudel told Karki, “Now save the country, be successful.” Karki did not respond to this and went ahead by saying thanks only.

‘The purpose of saving the constitution and maintaining national unity’
President Paudel appointed Karki as Prime Minister using constitutional rights. At the same time, the interim government was entrusted with the responsibility of conducting general elections within six months. The move was taken after the recent Gen Z movement and the decision of fracturing Parliament. Although there was a proposal to form a three -member cabinet, the ministerial posts could not be agreed. In such a situation, Sushila Karki will temporarily take charge of all the ministries.

Who was in the race besides Sushila Karki?
Long meetings were held before the 73 -year -old Karki had agreed on the name. Gen Z faction, President and Army Chief were also involved in these meetings. Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah and former head of Nepal Electricity Authority, Kurtman Ghising were also included in the race for the interim Prime Minister. But Balen Shah himself denied this post.

Why did Gen Z agree in Karki’s name
Sushila Karki has been Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice. During his tenure, he took a tough stance against corruption, making them popular among the youth. This is the reason that angry with the old system, Gen Z agitators accepted him as an interim Prime Minister.

Will Gen Z representative join the government?
At present, according to reports, representatives of GEN Z agitators will not directly join the government. However, they will monitor the interim government and keep an eye on the fact that decisions should be taken on the future of the youth.

Gen-Z protesters’ terms

General elections in 6 to 12 months : The first demand of the agitators was that general elections should be held in the country as soon as possible, so that the public can choose the government of their choice. Karki has accepted it.

Parliament dissolved: Nepal’s Parliament was dissolved under pressure from GEN-Z protesters and now the command of power is in the hands of Sushila Karki.

Construction of Civil-Sensies Government: The agitators had proposed that both citizens and the army should be represented in the government. Karki has also accepted this demand.

Reinnces on corruption: The protesters said that the movement was not only against social media ban, but corruption is the main reason. He proposed to form a powerful judicial commission to investigate the property of old parties and leaders.

Independent investigation into violence: A fair and independent investigation of the violence during the movement was also demanded. Sushila Karki has agreed to this so that the victims can get justice.
