Recently Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif has become a mother. She gave birth to a son on 7 November 2025. She and her husband Vicky Kaushal had shared the post on Instagram about becoming a mother. It was considered a very special feeling for Katrina who became a mother at the age of 42 after 4 years of marriage. But along with this, a discussion had also started among the people that how safe is pregnancy after 40. How difficult it can be to become a mother at this age. In such a situation, let us tell you today how difficult pregnancy is at the age of 42.

Why does pregnancy become difficult after the age of 40?

According to experts, after the age of 35, a woman’s fertility i.e. her ability to conceive gradually starts decreasing. At the same time, with increasing age, both the quality and number of eggs start decreasing. This is why it becomes very difficult to conceive at the age of 40. Apart from this, the risk of problems like thyroid, diabetes and high BP also increases at this age, which makes pregnancy more difficult. According to experts, if the woman’s fallopian tubes are open, the quality of the eggs is good and the partner’s sperm is normal, then the chances of getting pregnant at the age of 25 to 30 are about 20 percent, but after the age of 40, this chance reduces to only 5 percent.

Health risks increase after the age of 40

According to doctors, pregnancy after the age of 40 is considered high risk pregnancy. During this period, pregnant women are at higher risk of gestational hypertension, diabetes and C-section delivery. In some cases the possibility of miscarriage also increases. Apart from this, the risk of some genetic diseases in children also increases if pregnancy happens after the age of 40. These include problems like Down syndrome, thyroid disorder or mental disorder. Although this is not necessary in all cases, its chances increase greatly.

Chances of normal delivery are less after the age of 40

According to experts, the chances of normal delivery also reduce after the age of 40. Because the body’s stamina and muscle flexibility starts decreasing. In many cases, women have to undergo C-section delivery. However, if the condition of pregnancy and child is normal then normal delivery can also take place. Apart from this, experts say that if a woman plans pregnancy at the age of 40, then she has to take special care of her health. So that she can avoid problems during her pregnancy.

In India, many issues related to women’s health are now being discussed openly in society and medicine. But autoimmune diseases are such an important health problem, which still remains out of discussion. Recently, experts threw light on this serious topic at the 40th annual conference of the Indian Rheumatology Association, IRACON 2025, held in Dwarka, Gujarat. This surprising fact came to light in this conference that out of every 10 patients suffering from autoimmune diseases, about 7 are women, that is, 70 percent of autoimmune patients are women. This statistic is not only troubling, but also shows how women’s lifestyle, hormones, and social circumstances make them more sensitive to these diseases. So let us know what autoimmune diseases are and why this disease occurs more in women.

What are autoimmune diseases?

Autoimmune diseases mean diseases in which the body’s own immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy tissues and organs. Normally this system protects the body from infections and diseases, but in autoimmune disorders this protection system becomes a threat to the body. In these diseases, the joints, skin, muscles, blood vessels and internal organs of the body can get damaged. Some common autoimmune diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, hypothyroidism and psoriasis.

Why are autoimmune diseases more common in women?

According to experts, autoimmune diseases are found more in women than in men. There can be many reasons behind this. As –

1. Hormonal Changes: Hormones in women’s bodies can affect their immune system. Hormonal changes occur during phases like periods, pregnancy and menopause, which can impair the body’s immune response.

2. Genetic Causes: Some diseases run in families. If a woman’s mother or sister has an autoimmune disease, then the chances of that woman also getting it increases.

3. Sensitivity of the immune system: The immune system of women is more active than that of men. This is the reason why they are able to fight infections better, but sometimes this activity attacks the body’s own organs.

Why is the situation worse in India?

According to experts, 70 percent of autoimmune patients are women. But it is a matter of concern that most women come to the doctor when the disease has progressed significantly. Many women keep ignoring symptoms like fatigue, joint pain, skin problems or persistent fever. They consider them as normal weakness or the effect of age. At the same time, environmental and lifestyle problems in India worsen this situation. Increasing pollution and infection in cities also affects the immune system. Apart from this, the condition starts worsening due to poor diet, stress, and lack of sleep.

Family history diseases: In today’s time, people are getting many diseases, in which some diseases are such that doctors ask you your family history. If you are being asked by family history, then it is a serious reason. Actually, there are many diseases that run from generation to generation, that is, they have a genetic relationship. Family history in these diseases can increase the risk for you and the doctor can start examining or treatment accordingly. Let’s know about these diseases-

Heart disease

If someone in your family has a heart attack, high blood pressure or coronary artery disease, then you are also more likely to get this disease. Especially if it has happened to a male relative under 55 years of age or to a woman under 65, then it can be genetic.

Diabetes

The biggest risk factor of type-2 diabetes is genetics. If any of the parents have diabetes, then the risk of this disease in children increases manifold.

Also read – 30+ women bones start getting weak, eating these diets will increase bone density

Cancer is genetic

Cancer such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer or prostate cancer is directly related to genetic reasons. Gene mutations like BRCA1 and BRCA2 are considered responsible for this.

High blood pressure

This disease is affected not only by lifestyle, but also genetically. If your parents have high BP, then you should also keep checking it from time to time.

Mental health disorder

Genetic link has also been found in mental illnesses like depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia. It becomes necessary to pay special attention to emotional and mental health when there is a family history.

Alzheimer’s and dementia

These diseases in old age are also often associated with family history. Their possibility increases due to genetic factors.
