Indian Researcher Badar Khan: Indian researcher Badar Khan Suri, who was arrested in March 2025 by American immigration officials from his house in Virginia. He was released from custody on Wednesday (May 14) on the orders of the US District Court. Suri was kept closed at the immigration detention center in Texas for about two months without any official allegation. In this case, questions are now being raised whether rights are being violated in the name of political expression and pro-Filistine support in America.

According to the allegations made by the Trump administration, his visa was canceled and taken into custody by his social media post and his wife Mefez Saleh’s Gazi connection. It is noteworthy that Hamas has been declared by the US as a terrorist organization and the administration alleged that their social media posts are in support of Hamas.

US District Judge Petricia Toliver Giles in his judgment made it clear that the political speech made by Suri is preserved under the first amendment and there is no threat to public safety. The judge also said that the first amendment does not make any distinction between citizens and non-citizens. Badar Khan Suri spoke to the media for the first time after being released from custody. He told NBC News that he was kept in chains, behaved inhuman and had to spend the days in a dirt -filled jail. He said, “First I kept remembering my shadow for 7–8 days. I was completely held in chains – ankle, wrist, whole body.”

His 9 -year -old son knew where his father is and was in deep emotional crisis. His wife Mefez Saleh said, “I want me to embrace the judge who gave my children back to my children.”

This incident has raised serious concerns about freedom of expression of Pro-Filistine students and teachers in many Universities in America. Earlier too, Tufts University student Rumresa Ozork and Columbia University student Mohsen Mahdavi were detained after similar allegations and were later released on the court order.

Center for Constitutional Rights released a statement
The Center for Constitutional Rights issued a statement saying, “This case shows how immigration enforcement is being politicized. Constitutional rights have been violated by the Trump administration.” The matter has become even more sensitive at the international level because it has become a symbol of misuse of freedom of expression, freedom of expression, racial prejudice and American immigration policies.

Suri’s lawyer Hasan Ahmed has argued in a petition filed for Khan’s release that the reason for his arrest is that his wife is an American citizen of Palestinian origin. The lawyer says that the government suspects that Suri and his wife are opposed to the stance adopted towards Israel under the US foreign policy, due to which they have been targeted.

Suri has been accused of promoting Palestinian organization Hamas, which the US has declared a terrorist organization. Apart from this, he is also accused of having close relations with a known or suspected terrorist.

Homeland Security Department said this in a statement

Assistant Secretary, Homeland Security Department, Trichia McLoglin wrote on the social media platform X, “Suri was a student at the University of Georgetown and was promoting Hamas there. He was active in promoting anti-Jewish sentiments on social media.”

Suri was a Foreign Exchange Student at Georgetown University actively Spreading Hamas Propaganda and Promoting Antisemitism on Social Media.

He wrote, ‘Suri has a close relationship with a known or suspected terrorist, who is a senior advisor of Hamas. The Foreign Minister issued an order on 15 March 2025, stating that Suri’s activities and his presence in the US make him worth exile under Section 237 (A) (4) (C) (I) of INA.
