Makar Sankranti in Jageshwar dham: The festival of Makar Sankranti is being celebrated with great pomp across the country today i.e. on 14 January 2026. In the world famous historical Jageshwar Dham of Uttarakhand, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Lord Jyotirling Jageshwar Maharaj meditated for a month in the cave of Ghrit Kamal.

The temple management committee, priests, villagers and devotees have made a cave with 251 kg of pure mountain ghee and covered the cave with ghee lotus. The construction of the cave began with special worship and rituals. Lord Shiva will now come out of this cave on the first date of Phalgun month. Devotees will worship Shiva cave throughout the month and after one month Shiva will take him out for meditation.

Head priest of Jageshwar Dham, Hemant Bhatt said, ‘Makar Sankranti is especially celebrated in Jageshwar Dham. This year too, 251 kg of cow’s ghee was purified, boiled in water, a cave was made and Bholenath was made to sit for penance for a month. And this tradition is a very ancient tradition.

He further told that, Bholenath had performed penance for a month in the month of Magh. Taking the same tradition forward, the priests and we together have followed this tradition. And the main reason for celebrating Makar Sankranti is that Lord Sun enters Capricorn from Sagittarius.

Why is Jageshwar Dham famous?

Located amidst the dense forests of deodar in Almora district of Uttarakhand, a group of ancient temples dedicated to Lord Shiva consisting of more than 100 temples, which is considered one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Mahamrityunjay Mahadev Temple is the center of attraction here.

This place is also known as Daruk Forest, where Lord Shiva performed severe penance. Here Shiva is worshiped in his phallic form.
