Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was on hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar for the last 20 days, was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police in the early hours of Saturday. Wangchuk was fasting in support of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in the alleged NEET paper leak case. Police say that this step was taken after his deteriorating health, advice of medical experts and the order of Delhi High Court.

Police arrived in plain clothes, removed after siege

Early on Saturday, a large number of policemen, including many in plain clothes, reached Jantar Mantar and cordoned off the entire area. After this, curtains were placed around Sonam Wangchuk and she was safely taken out from there and taken to Safdarjung Hospital. During this, CJP workers protested, raised slogans and tried to stop the police, but the police took them to the hospital.

Police said- the entire operation was peaceful

Delhi Police said that Sonam Wangchuk was taken to the hospital with complete caution and restraint. According to the police, this action was taken only in view of his deteriorating health condition and following the instructions of the High Court.

Safdarjung Hospital released health update

Safdarjung Hospital said that Sonam Wangchuk has been admitted to the emergency ward. Due to prolonged hunger strike and lack of water in his body, he has become very weak. At present he is conscious, his vital health tests are normal, but he needs constant monitoring, treatment and medical observation.

Appeal to protesters to vacate Jantar Mantar

After Sonam Wangchuk was taken to the hospital, Delhi Police appealed to the protesters present at Jantar Mantar to vacate the protest site peacefully as soon as possible. Police said in the statement that the entire action has been taken as per the order of Delhi High Court and medical advice.

High Court had given instructions for medical monitoring

This action was taken two days after the hearing in Delhi High Court. The court had said that the life of any citizen is precious and Sonam Wangchuk should be medically examined daily. Besides, instructions were also given to provide immediate medical treatment if needed.

Wife put condition regarding treatment

Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali J. Angmo confirmed that he has been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. He said that Wangchuk should not be given any treatment or medicine without his permission. He said that if any treatment was started without his consent and anything happened, the responsibility would be on the people concerned.

Announcement of Parliament march on 20th July

Cockroach Janata Party workers have been protesting at Jantar Mantar for the last 29 days. Their demand is that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan should resign in the alleged NEET paper leak case. The protesters have also announced to march to Parliament on July 20, the first day of the monsoon session. Meanwhile, this is considered to be the first major action after the recent change of leadership in Delhi Police.

His wife Geetanjali Angmo has reached the Supreme Court against the custody of Ladakh social activist Sonam Wangchuk. Gitanjali has filed a habeas corpus petition. He has demanded immediate release of Sonam.

The petition states that Sonam was organizing peaceful agitations in a democratic manner. He was wrongly accused. Now it is being asked to take him to Jodhpur under NSA, but the administration has not provided detention orders related to it. In such a situation, this custody is illegal. Sonam should be released.

Magsaysay Award -awarded environmental scientist Sonam Wangchuk is the main face of Ladakh’s movement for a long time. This movement is related to the demand for state status to Ladakh and special status under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. By joining the sixth schedule, the region gets constitutional guarantee like more rights on local resources, cultural protection and autonomous council.

The movement through picketing and hunger strike took a fierce form in the past. During this time, 4 people died due to police bullet. The Ladakh administration accused Sonam of working for foreign powers. He was detained on 26 September. He is accused of keeping contact with Pakistan’s intelligence agency, illegal donations from abroad.

Recently, Gitanjali Angmo told ABP News that a well -planned campaign is being carried out against Sonam and her organization Himalayan Institute of Alternative Ladakh (HIL). Its purpose is to weaken the demand for the sixth schedule. Sonam’s visit to Pakistan was for an environmental program. He has no connection with the Pakistani agent found in Ladakh.
