Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu, after creating history by winning the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games for the third consecutive time, attributed her success to the unwavering support of her family. He said that during a journey full of injuries, struggles and many sacrifices, his family supported him at every step.

“My family has supported me a lot till date. I suffered many injuries, but my family supported me a lot,” Mirabai said after winning the women’s 48 kg title at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Sunday.

The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist also acknowledged the role of her long-time coach Vijay Sharma in maintaining her consistent performance at the high level. He said, “Right from the beginning, there are many things for which we need to work hard and maintain focus – be it games or any championship, how we have to perform and how to maintain that performance. Vijay sir has always supported me in all these things.”

He said, “We were not going to put in so much effort in these games, but my first attempt failed due to my own fault. After this, we thought that now we have to give all our strength. This performance is very important for me, because I have controlled my body weight for a long time. It has been very difficult for me to bring my weight to the 48 kg category.

The 31-year-old weightlifter failed in her first attempt of snatching 82 kg, but Mirabai managed to lift that weight in her second attempt and then lifted 85 kg in her last attempt, thereby creating a new record for snatch at the Commonwealth Games.

After this, he lifted eight kilograms more weight than other weightlifters in ‘clean and jerk’. Even though she could not lift the bar in her first attempt, the Indian star compensated for it by lifting 105 kg in her second attempt and easily won the gold medal. In this way Mirabai became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Earlier, he had also won gold medals in the Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022 games.

When the Indian national anthem played on the podium, Chanu could not control her tears. He said, “When our national anthem is sung, when we listen to it, tears automatically come out. These are tears of happiness, because I had won the first gold medal for India.”

Nigeria’s silver medalist Ruth Asukuo Nyong’o finished second with a total lift of 168 kg (75 snatch and 93 clean and jerk). After winning the medal, Nyong said, “This medal means a lot to me, which was not easy to win. The only thing in my mind was to win the medal. I had faith in my training. I wanted to give my best. I want to congratulate Mirabai Chanu on winning the gold.”

Malaysia’s Irene Henry won the bronze medal with a total of 167 kg (77 snatch and 90 clean and jerk). Irene said, “This medal means a lot to me. I hope it will make the people of Malaysia feel happy and proud. I have played against Mirabai Chanu before as well. We are good friends. We also follow each other on Instagram.”

Expressing happiness over Chanu’s title win, a fan said, “It was amazing. The rest of the players were lifting 80-85 kg, but Mirabai Chanu lifted 105 kg. It was unbelievable. Her dominance was visible in this game. Proud of her for making India proud.”
