Should India Be Worried About Ebola Virus: The world has once again become alert about the Ebola virus. A new outbreak of Ebola has been confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and preliminary genetic testing suggests the virus has been spreading quietly for weeks, possibly months. The biggest concern is that many questions regarding the behavior of this new strain and its potential have still not been answered. In such a situation, like many countries of the world, the question is being raised in India too whether there is a need to fear this virus.

How does Ebola virus spread?

According to experts, Ebola is not among those viruses that spread rapidly through air. This virus enters the body only when it comes in direct contact with the blood, saliva, feces, urine or other bodily fluids of an infected person. Dr. David Hayman, an expert at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who studied Ebola for the first time in 1976, says that this virus spreads from person to person mainly through bodily fluids. This is why health workers and family members who take care of patients are most at risk.

Read this also – Where food is being prepared, disease is thriving, is the kitchen sink making your children sick too?

How does it spread in the body?

After entering the body, the virus directly attacks the immune system. According to Dr. Bodo Plakhter, virology professor at the University of Mainz, Germany, the virus first increases its numbers in the lymph glands and then reaches different parts of the body through the blood. It targets cells that under normal circumstances protect the body from infection. When this immune system becomes weak, the virus starts spreading rapidly throughout the body.

Why is it difficult to identify?

The biggest challenge of Ebola is its initial symptoms. Initially the patient may feel problems like normal fever, cold, infection or malaria. Sometimes the patient feels relief for some time, but after this the disease can take a serious form. According to Dr. David Heman, in the later stages a situation like bleeding from various parts of the body may arise. This is the time when the patient is most infectious and the risk of spreading the infection increases.

What is the situation in India?

Now the question is how much India should fear. As of May 2026, no confirmed case of Ebola has been reported in India. According to the assessment of experts of clinikk, a website providing information about health, at present the direct threat to the Indian population is less. Surveillance systems at the country’s major airports, health screening, rapid testing facilities in major hospitals and the World Health Organization’s warning system are helping in identifying possible cases. However, in view of travel and trade relations with African countries, it is considered necessary to maintain vigilance.

WHO Declares Ebola Outbreak Global Health Emergency: The outbreak of Ebola virus is increasing rapidly in the African countries Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. Seeing the seriousness of the situation, the World Health Organization has declared it an international public health emergency. This time the infection is spreading due to the rare Bundibugyo strain, which is known to spread infection rapidly. The concern of experts has also increased because at present there is no approved vaccine or special treatment available for this strain.

More than 900 suspected cases

According to the latest report of the World Health Organization, more than 900 suspected cases have been reported so far, out of which 101 cases have been confirmed. The organization’s Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that in Ituri province, which has become the epicenter of this outbreak, about 5 million people are living amidst conflict and unstable situation.

119 suspected deaths and 10 confirmed deaths recorded

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Congo has so far recorded 904 suspected cases, 101 confirmed cases, 119 suspected deaths and 10 confirmed deaths. As of May 24, 5 confirmed cases and 1 death have been confirmed in Uganda. The number of infected people increased further after three new lab-confirmed cases were reported on May 23.

The virus is spreading rapidly

On May 22, the World Health Organization increased the risk category to high risk at the national level, although it is considered high risk at the regional level and low risk at the global level. Initially the infection was limited to Ituri and North-Kivu provinces of Congo, but now it has spread to South-Kivu province. Health officials say the virus is now spreading within communities and local control efforts are not proving sufficient. As of May 24, there have been 5 confirmed cases and 1 death in Uganda. On May 23, information about three new lab-confirmed cases was revealed.

Precaution is being taken in India

Here the Government of India has also increased precautions. The Health Ministry has issued a health advisory for passengers coming from or transiting through Congo, Uganda and South Sudan. The government has said that passengers who have symptoms like fever, vomiting, headache, unusual bleeding or coming in contact with an infected person should immediately inform airport health officers before immigration clearance.

No cases of Ebola in India yet

At present, no confirmed case of Ebola has been reported in India, but screening, lab preparations and quarantine systems have been strengthened at airports. The Health Ministry has also advised citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Congo, Uganda and South Sudan.

Preparations to deal with the situation in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh government has intensified precautionary measures in the state. Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav said that the government is on high alert and the medical and health departments are fully prepared to deal with any possible situation. Earlier, the Tamil Nadu government had also increased surveillance and security measures in airports, ports and government hospitals following the advisory of the Centre.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), new cases are being reported along with increased surveillance to combat Ebola. World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that more than 900 suspected cases have been reported so far. Of these, 101 cases are confirmed. This disease is spreading most in Ituri province of DRC. Tedros said that about 5 million people live in this area and there has been a conflict going on here for a long time. Of these, one in four people is in need of humanitarian assistance and one in five has left their home and been displaced.

Ebola alert raised in DRC-Uganda

Tedros said in a post on the social media platform ‘X’ that people are continuously fleeing due to violence, including health workers and people helping. Due to this, there is a lot of difficulty in identifying Ebola patients and doing contact tracing. If the disease is not caught on time, treatment also becomes difficult. He also said that due to fear and insecurity, trust among people is decreasing, due to which the work has become more difficult. The WHO chief said WHO and humanitarian health partners were still present in many areas of Ituri, including some very remote and unsafe places. People there are struggling not only with Ebola but also with many other diseases. Tedros said that it is very important to provide full health services there, so that the immediate needs of the people are met and at the same time trust is also built, which is very important to fight Ebola.

On May 16, 2026, Tedros said that this outbreak of Ebola virus in DRC and Uganda has been declared internationally as ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern’ (PHEIC). On May 22, WHO increased its risk level to very high at the national level, ‘high’ at the regional level and ‘low’ at the global level. According to WHO, Ebola is a serious disease that can often be fatal and it affects humans and some animals (such as monkeys). This virus usually spreads to humans from wild animals (bats, porcupines and some monkeys). After this, it can also spread from person to person through contact with an infected person’s blood, sweat, body fluids or things that come in contact with him (such as clothes, bedding).

Africa Ebola outbreak: Africa is once again facing the great threat of Ebola virus. This time the cause for concern is the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which no approved vaccine is available yet. The rapidly increasing cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda have alerted health agencies around the world. According to reports, hundreds of suspected cases have been reported and many people have also died. The biggest concern is that this virus is now reaching densely populated areas, due to which the risk of spreading to other countries has also increased.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and Africa CDC have considered this situation a serious health emergency. As of now, it is not clear how much effect the vaccine for the Jere strain of Ebola will have on the Bundibugyo strain. For this reason, the world is now busy in the race to prepare a new vaccine.

India has a big role in the race to make vaccine

In this difficult time, India’s big vaccine company Serum Institute of India is going to play an important role. This Pune-based company is preparing to make a new vaccine in collaboration with Oxford University and CEPI. This vaccine will be based on the ChAdOx platform, which was also used in the Covishield vaccine during Covid-19. Serum Institute says that it already has such technology and machines with the help of which vaccine doses can be prepared in a very short time.

According to the company, if everything goes well, initial production can be started within 20 to 30 days. Just as India had given a large quantity of vaccines to the world during the Covid pandemic, similarly India can now emerge as a reliable partner in the Ebola crisis too. Besides, it also shows the medical and biotech strength of India.

Challenge of time and security before scientists

At present, the biggest challenge facing scientists is time. Two vaccine candidates are being worked on for the Bundibugyo strain. The first is based on rVSV technology, which uses the same technology as the already existing Ervebo vaccine, but its problem is that its dose is not yet available and it may take several months to prepare. On the other hand, the specialty of ChAdOx platform is its fast production capacity because it has been used on a large scale during the time of Covid, hence its factory system is already ready. However, it also has a weakness. Till now, this vaccine has not been fully tested against Bundibugyo virus on animals or humans. In such a situation, health agencies will have to take a very careful decision whether to give priority to speedy testing or wait for a longer trial. This decision can decide the safety of millions of people in the future.

India became the hope of the world

This Ebola crisis spreading in Africa is a warning to the whole world that the epidemic can come back any time. Additionally, it becomes even more difficult to prevent disease in areas suffering from conflict and poverty. At such a time, India’s entry has emerged as a new ray of hope. If Serum Institute and its partners are successful in preparing a safe and effective vaccine soon, it can save the lives of thousands of people. At the same time, it will be proved that India has the ability to help not only in its own health crisis but also in the health crisis of the entire world. The next few months will be very important, because they will decide how quickly the world can stop this new Ebola threat.

Why Indoor Air Pollution Is Dangerous: A recent study has raised serious concerns over how dangerous indoor air can be. Epidemiologist Vikram Niranjan, associated with this research, has described it as a “global health emergency” and has expressed the need for immediate action on it. This study, published in Thecooldown, was conducted to understand the impact of indoor air pollution in 204 countries between 1990 and 2021. It was found that in many parts of the world, people are still using traditional fuels like wood, coal and cow dung for cooking, which makes the indoor air polluted. Makes it extremely poisonous.

So many lakh people die every year

Although the use of these solid fuels has reduced to some extent with time, the problem has not completely disappeared. Especially in many areas of Africa and South Asia, people’s access to clean and safe fuel is still limited. At the same time, due to availability of better options in developed countries, this problem has reduced. This situation is also worrying because indoor air pollution is linked to many serious diseases. According to research, exposure to polluted air in childhood can cause respiratory problems, impact on brain development and long-term health problems. According to data from the United Nations Environment Programme, every year about 4 million people die prematurely just because of polluted indoor air.

Where do problems occur?

The problem is not limited to poor countries only. Gas stoves are also becoming a big reason, because they release poisonous gases like benzene and nitrogen dioxide inside the house. A recent study also revealed that gas stoves may be responsible for one out of every eight cases of asthma in children in America. Experts believe that to deal with this problem it is necessary to move rapidly towards clean energy.

Options like induction stoves are considered better because they not only consume less energy but also do not release harmful gases. In some countries, governments are also giving subsidies and discounts to people to adopt such devices. Vikram Niranjan says that governments and international organizations should jointly take such steps so that every person can have access to clean fuel.
