According to the report of the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board, an independent organization formed with the support of the World Health Organization and the World Bank, the risk of infectious diseases is now increasing faster than before. The report said that compared to the last ten years, the country and the health system have become less capable of recovering from the epidemic. This warning comes at a time when the World Health Organization has declared the new outbreak of Ebola spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda as an international public health emergency. This time, the less understood Bundibugyo strain of Ebola has emerged, which has further increased the concern.

Why is the risk of infection spreading rapidly?

The report A World on the Edge: Priorities for a Pandemic-Resilient Future, released during the 79th World Health Assembly, said that investments in preparedness to deal with the pandemic are proving to be far less than the rapidly increasing threats. According to the report, increasing geopolitical tensions, environmental disturbances related to climate change, increasing global mobility and reduction in international development funding are weakening world health security.

What were the things discussed in the report?

The report reviewed major health emergencies such as the Ebola outbreak of 2014-16 and 2019-20, COVID-19 and monkeypox. It found that after Covid, new health systems and plans were made, but the global capacity to deal with the epidemic still remains highly uneven. The most worrying thing came to light regarding the access to vaccines and medicines. According to the report, it took almost two years for the monkeypox vaccine to reach poor countries, which was more delay than the Covid vaccine. The board warned that the world is moving backwards in terms of equitable access to vaccines, testing and treatment.

The report also said that the pandemic is no longer just a health crisis, but is also affecting democratic institutions and people’s trust. During both Covid and Ebola, political polarization, attacks on scientific institutions and rapid spread of misinformation were seen. Its effects persist long after the pandemic is over.

Why is the report important for India?

India’s dense population, rapidly growing cities and large-scale internal migration, which has suffered one of the world’s largest Covid outbreaks, increase the risk of future pandemics.
