Petrol Diesel Update: The Central Government has taken a big step with the aim of maintaining uninterrupted availability of petrol and diesel in the country. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued a gazette notification on June 11, 2026, imposing temporary regulations on the retail sale of motor spirit (petrol) and high speed diesel (HSD).

Under the new order, limits have been set on the sale of diesel from retail petrol pumps and new conditions have been imposed for industrial, commercial and institutional consumers. The order will initially be effective for 90 days.

Why did the government take this step?

The gazette notification said that the current global geopolitical conditions are impacting international petroleum supply chains, shipping logistics and the availability of petroleum products. The government believes that in such circumstances it is necessary to maintain the availability of petrol and diesel, stop hoarding and deliver fuel to common consumers at reasonable prices.

According to the notification, due to widening gap between retail and wholesale prices in some areas, industrial, commercial and institutional consumers had started purchasing fuel from retail petrol pumps in large quantities. Due to this, there was a possibility of abnormal increase in demand at retail outlets in some areas and availability being affected for common consumers.

What does the new order say?

Special powers have been given to oil marketing companies and authorized retailers under the “Motor Spirit and High Speed Diesel (Temporary Regulation of Supply through Retail Outlets) Order, 2026” issued by the Central Government.

According to the order, institutional, direct, industrial and commercial consumers will no longer be able to purchase petrol or diesel from retail outlets and will have to use their consumer pumps or fixed supply system for their needs.

Maximum 200 liters of diesel per vehicle per day

According to the most important provision of the notification, retail outlets will be able to sell diesel only in vehicle tanks or PESO approved containers. Apart from this, no customer or vehicle will be given more than 200 liters of diesel in a day.

The government has also clarified that diesel purchased in this manner cannot be resold. Oil marketing companies and petrol pump operators have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with these provisions.

The order will remain in force for 90 days

According to the notification, this arrangement has become effective from the date of issue of the order. Its initial validity will be for 90 days or till any other order issued by the government. If necessary, its duration can also be extended.

Explained: If you count Musk’s one trillion dollars, it will take 31,700 years, the world will eat enough for 60 years, Indians will get 60000

Search and seizure powers were also given

Under the order, authorized gazetted officers of the Central and State Governments, police officers and authorized officers of oil companies will have search and acquisition powers. These officers have been given the responsibility of ensuring that the provisions of the order are not violated.

State Governments and Union Territory Administrations have been directed to take strict action against hoarding, black marketing, unauthorized purchase, diversion and other irregularities related to diesel and petrol under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 and other applicable laws.

Legal action will be taken against violation

The notification clarifies that violation of any provision of the order or the instructions issued thereunder will be punishable under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 and other applicable laws.

Transport industry expressed apprehension of practical problems

Rajendra Kapoor, President of All India Motor and Goods Transport Association (Regd.) has expressed concern over the new provisions. He says that the new rules related to diesel sale may pose many practical challenges to the transport industry.

He said that if truck drivers get diesel filled from different cities and states, it will become difficult to determine freight rates, because diesel prices are different in every state and keep changing from time to time.

According to Rajendra Kapoor, it will not be easy to ensure from which place, in what quantity and at what price the driver is purchasing diesel. In such a situation, it can be very difficult for transport companies and truck owners to accurately estimate, monitor and account for fuel costs.

He said that it is not practical to expect the same level of transparency and honesty from all drivers. Therefore, the government should seriously consider the ground challenges and operational realities of the transport sector before implementing any such decision.

Relief to common consumers, keep an eye on industry

The government argues that this step has been taken to maintain the availability of petrol and diesel, prevent hoarding and protect the interests of common consumers. At the same time, the transport and industrial sectors believe that the new restrictions may have an impact on operating costs and freight structure. In such a situation, everyone will keep an eye on the actual impact of this order in the coming days.
