Center Bans Festival Gift: The festival of Diwali is coming a few days later. This festival is known for the trend and grand expenses of gifts. But this time the central government has taken strict steps and gave clear instructions to all ministries, departments and public sector undertakings to avoid spending on gifts on Diwali or other festivals.

Order of finance ministry

The Department of Expenditure of the Union Finance Ministry has released an office memorandum on 19 September 2025. It states that it is the objective of this order to stop spending on non-essential goods and maintain fiscal balance.

It has been clarified in the circular that there will be a ban on buying or distributing gifts on Diwali or other festivals by any ministry or department. The order was approved by the Secretary (Expected) and after the signature of the Joint Secretary, it has been implemented with immediate effect.

The government believes that proper use of public resources is necessary. In such a situation, these money will be imposed on the work which are involved in public interest and the economy of the country by banning the festivals on the festivals.

Efforts to boost economy

Significantly, amidst American high tariffs and global pressure, the government is constantly trying to increase the speed of the economy. Recently, GST 2.0 reforms have been implemented from September 22, in which the prices of many goods have come down. This is expected to increase demand. In such a situation, the double effort of the government is clearly visible- to increase demand and encourage consumption on one side. On the other hand, maintaining fiscal balance by cutting non-essential expenses.
