After the anti-Gen-Z protests in Nepal, the country’s prison system has completely collapsed. According to the Prison Management Department, after the violent protests on September 9, more than 13,000 prisoners escaped from different jails across the country, including a large number of foreign nationals.

According to government data, 540 Indian citizens who were serving sentences for various crimes are now absconding. Apart from these, 108 other foreign prisoners are also reported missing. The government has issued a high alert across the country and security agencies have been instructed to capture these prisoners.

More than 5,000 Nepali prisoners also abscond in Nepal

According to the data released by the Nepal government, more than 5,000 Nepalese citizens are among the prisoners who escaped from jails. The incident occurred during the Gen Z movement on September 8 and 9 when thousands of youth staged violent protests against the government in Kathmandu and other cities. During these demonstrations, there were clashes between security forces and protesters, in which 76 people died. When the situation went out of control, violence spread in many jails and prisoners broke administrative control and got the opportunity to escape.

So far 7,700 prisoners have been recaptured or returned

Nepalese officials said that so far 7,735 of the escaped prisoners have either returned voluntarily or have been caught by the security forces. However, thousands of prisoners are still absconding, including an alarming number of Indian citizens. Nepal’s Home Ministry has put all the jails and border posts on alert so that the absconding prisoners cannot cross the border of India, Bhutan or Bangladesh. Given the open border between Nepal and India, security forces fear that many Indian prisoners may try to enter India.

Special operation in search of 540 Indian prisoners

The Nepal government has contacted the Indian Embassy to identify 540 Indian prisoners. According to sources, many Indian prisoners were serving sentences for crimes like drug trafficking, theft or counterfeiting. Nepal’s prison department said that photographs and details of these prisoners are being shared with the concerned security agencies so that search operations can be conducted in the border districts. The Indian Home Ministry is also on alert in its border states Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sikkim and Uttarakhand on the basis of information received from Nepal.

10 prisoners died in action by security forces

During this mass escape in Nepal’s jails, security forces tried to control the situation, in which 10 prisoners died. According to officials, these deaths mainly occurred during clashes and firing when prisoners were trying to escape by breaking the prison walls. At the same time, human rights organizations of Nepal have demanded an investigation from the government into the police action. He says that responsibility for the failure of the jail security system should also be fixed.

The unexpected violent movement of Gen-Z lasted barely 48 hours, but it created tremendous turmoil in Nepal. Nepal plunged into a period of deep mourning, anger and collective uncertainty. It has just started taking care of itself. On September 8 and 9, 2025, 75 people were killed and more than 2,000 were injured in the Gen-Z movement against corruption, mismanagement and social media regulation.

According to the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Nepal (FNCCI), the recent violent protests and incidents of arson have caused damage to private property worth approximately US$571 million. The private sector contributes 81 percent to Nepal’s national economy and 86 percent of total jobs are in the private sector.

Assessment of damage to historical heritage and buildings continues

The assessment of damage caused to government buildings and historical heritage is still underway. The government has not yet made public the cost of the damage caused to the Prime Minister’s Office (Singh Darbar), the historic Parliament House, the Supreme Court and the President’s Office (Rashtrapati Bhavan).

After these incidents, an interim government was formed on September 12 under the leadership of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. Till now he has expanded the cabinet twice by appointing eight ministers. The interim government has to conduct free, fair and credible general elections within the next six months.

Commission will investigate and submit report within 3 months

The government has constituted a three-member commission headed by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki to investigate human rights violations and damage to public and private properties. The commission has to submit its report within three months.

In the statement issued by the Home Minister, it has been said that now complaints of arson or theft will not be filed, because the commission has started its work. Critics say that this weakens the role of the regular criminal justice process.

Nepal’s President advised to participate in the elections

Earlier, the recommendations of many commissions made during Jan Andolan-I (1990) and Jan Andolan-II (2006/2007) were not implemented, which strengthened the resentment. The main challenges now facing the interim government are to conduct the upcoming general elections and implement a new voter registration ordinance so that the youth participating in the protests can also vote. The voter enrollment period is 90 days.

The Prime Minister, after consulting the Election Commission, has given instructions to hold elections in March 2026. The President has also met political parties and advised them to participate in the elections. Despite the Prime Minister’s promise to hold elections, differences remain among the youth. Many unorganized groups have emerged on social media platforms like Discord. Some groups first tried to communicate with the Army Chief and later with the President.

Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah silent

Some youth are advocating reforms in existing political parties, while others are demanding constitutional amendment and a directly elected Prime Minister. Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah had appealed for peace during the protests, but has remained silent since then. If differences among the youth persist, there is a fear of violence in the elections.

The youth are now considering registering their own political party instead of becoming independent candidates. The government of former Prime Minister K. Travel ban has been imposed on five people including P. Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak. CPN-UML has objected to this and said that if the investigation appears to be politically motivated then the parties will oppose it.

15,000 prisoners escaped from 28 jails

Following the violence during the protests, 486 police units were attacked and 1,247 weapons were looted. About 15,000 prisoners escaped from 28 jails, of which only half have returned. Some prisoners were arrested in New Delhi after crossing the Indian border.

The security system in Nepal is divided into three organs, Nepal Police, Nepal Armed Forces and Nepal Army, but lack of coordination was seen among them. The police played an active role during the movement, but there was a delay in the deployment of other forces. Holding elections in these circumstances will be challenging for the interim government. The government will have to ensure compliance with the law to curb anarchy and corruption. Nepal also needs international support, including from its neighbours, for stability.

Former Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has given a statement publicly for the first time after the violence in the country and his coup. He lashed out at the new Gen Z administration on Saturday (September 27, 2025) after his first public presence. He addressed the interim government of Nepal under the leadership of Sushila Karki, former Chief Justice of Nepal, as the Jane Z government. He said that this interim government is a ‘government to show off’.

He said, ‘This is Jane Z government, which has not been made according to the provisions of the Constitution of Nepal, nor the people have chosen it by voting. This government has been formed through the incident of violence, sabotage and arson.

Former PM raised questions on Nepal’s interim government

During this, former Prime Minister of Nepal KP Sharma Oli also questioned the intention of the current leadership of the country. He said, ‘What does the government think that we will run abroad by handing over the country in their hands? We have to make this country. We have to make this country constitutional and democratic and bring the politics here back on track. We will bring the rule of law again in the country.

KP Oli also made a statement on rumors related to violence

The former Prime Minister of Nepal has also made a statement about the rumors related to violence during this period, which is being associated with them. He said, ‘Another rumor has been raised by taking my name. People are being provoked to say that give me a gun, I will kill him, give me a sword, I will cut it and give me a drone, so I will attack him. All these things are being spread with great enthusiasm. But what was my role in this?

He said, ‘Hearing the news of firing, I gathered information about it. I was told that only rubber bullets were used, but later I came to know that 14 people had died. I want to ask how did those people get shot in their heads? How can I stop it?’

Nepal’s newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki included four new ministers in his interim cabinet on Monday (September 22, 2025), increasing the number of ministers to eight. At a function held at the President’s Office Sheetal Niwas, President Ramchandra Paudel administered the oath of office and secrecy to former Judge Anil Kumar Sinha, National Invention Center founder Mahavir Pun, journalist Jagdish Kharel and expert Madan Pariar.

With the involvement of four new ministers, the number of members in the Council of Ministers led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki (73) has increased to eight. The Prime Minister has kept many important departments with him. Sinha is the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, while Karel is the Minister of Communications and Information Technology. Pariyar is the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Development, while again is the Minister of Education and Science and Technology.

Only 11 members suggested in the interim cabinet

According to the Constitution of Nepal, the Council of Ministers may have a maximum of 25 members including the Prime Minister. However, Karki recently suggested that his interim cabinet could have only 11 members. The President’s Office announced on Sunday (September 21, 2025) that 5 new ministers would take oath on Monday. However, Sangeeta Kaushal Mishra was later removed from the list due to her controversial background.

According to sources, the anti -corruption organization Akhtiyar misuse research Commission, Nepal (CIAA) is investigating a case of corruption related to Mishra. Karki became the Prime Minister of Nepal on 12 September and the ongoing political uncertainty in the country ended.

On the first day of ‘Gen-Z’ protests in Nepal on September 8, 2025, 19 people were killed in an automatic weapons firing. Former Prime Minister KP Oli has made a big claim on this. On Friday (September 19, 2025), he said that the police had neither automatic weapons nor his government had given any order to shoot directly at the protesters.

He said that the protesters should be investigated for the use of automated weapons. KP Oli resigned from the post of Prime Minister on 9 September after violent protests in Nepal. The former Prime Minister claimed that the youth died in the violence by conspirators infiltrating during the protests.

72 people killed in ‘Gen-Z’ protests

He said that such a large number of people were not killed in the same day in the last movements. According to the police, at least 72 people have been confirmed in ‘Gen-Z’ protests. Those killed are also included in the Bhatbhatni Supermarket burnt by the crowd who were found dead.

KP Oli says that during violent protests, the reason behind the arson in the offices of the government’s Chief Administrative Center, Singh Darbar, Parliamentary Building, Supreme Court Bhawan and other court complexes, business establishments, political parties is a conspiracy behind the arson.

Former Prime Minister’s house in the grip of arson

The house of Oli located in Balkot area of Bhaktapur, about four kilometers from Kathmandu, was also hit by arson. Apart from this, the houses of other former Prime Ministers including Sher Bahadur Deuba, Pushp Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda and Jhalnath Khanal were also targeted.

KP Oli was under the security of Nepal Army after violent protests. He left the security of the army on Thursday and went to live in a rented house in Gundu area of Bhaktapur, about 12 km from Kathmandu.

Parliamentary election on this date in Nepal

Oli is facing allegations of taking Nepal towards the downfall in his government. Critics say that during his prime ministership, Oli has always tried to present the image that the country is on the path of prosperity, although many scams came out during this period.

After Oli’s resignation, an interim government has been formed in Nepal under the leadership of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, which has been entrusted with the responsibility of holding parliamentary elections within six months. The date of March 5 has been set for the upcoming elections of the House of Representatives.

Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has been made the head of the interim government in Nepal. He was sworn in as the interim Prime Minister of the country on Friday (September 12, 2025). Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first response has come when the new government is formed in the neighboring country. PM Modi congratulated Sushila Karki and said that India is fully committed to Nepal’s progress and prosperity.

PM Modi posted on the social media platform x and said, ‘Hearty greetings to Honorable Sushila Karki ji on taking office as the Prime Minister of Nepal. India is fully committed to the peace, progress and prosperity of Nepal’s siblings. Prime Minister Modi has also tweeted in Nepali language and congratulated him.

Sushila Karki is considered a supporter of India, while KP Sharma Oli was called a supporter of China. Sushila also praised PM Narendra Modi before becoming the caretaker Prime Minister. He had said that he is impressed with PM Narendra Modi and also praised his functioning.

Genz protesters proposed Sushila Karki

After the resignation of KP Sharma Oli, 73 -year -old Sushila Karki was given the command after several days of political uncertainty. Genz protesters proposed his name to the Army Chief. However, President Ramchandra Paudel was repeatedly asking for the constitution to consider his name. He said that the crisis will have to be resolved only by staying within the scope of the Constitution. In fact, in the Constitution of Nepal, the former Justice is not allowed to hold a political position, but the President had to bow down to the demand of the agitators and on September 12, Sushila Karki was sworn in.

Sushila Karki accepted this demand of Genz protesters

1- The demand for holding elections between 6 and 12 months in Nepal has been accepted.
2- The Parliament of Nepal has been dissolved, now the command of Nepal is in the hands of Sushila Karki.
3- Government with representation of both civil and army.
4- Powerful Judicial Commission should be formed to investigate the property of old parties and leaders.
5-There should be an independent and fair investigation into the violence against the protesters during the movement. People affected by this should get justice.

The ruling CPN-UML of Nepal has objected to the agreement between India and China to resume border trade through Lipulekh Pass and urged both countries to withdraw from this system. India and China had agreed to resume border trade through Lipulekh Pass and two other trading points last month.

Nepal describes Lipulekh as its territory, which India has clearly rejected and said that it is neither appropriate nor based on historical facts and evidence. Party sources said that the party has urged the Nepal government to resolve the issue through high -level diplomatic initiatives and has reiterated the rights of Nepal on the east of Kali river including Kalapani, Limpiadhura and Lipulekh.

Disagreement

It was held on 5-7 September at Godavari Municipality in Lalitpur district, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma was included in the 28-point contemporary resolution passed at the second national conference of CPN-UML led by Oli. He said that the party urged both countries to withdraw the lipule trade agreement.

The proposal mentioned disagreement over the lipule line trade route agreement during the recent visit of Prime Minister and UML President Oli and said that this trend has increased the international reputation of Nepal. It also mentioned bilateral and multilateral programs during the journey, which improved the image of the country abroad.

Controversy over these parts of India

The conference also emphasized that political stability has been established by the seven -point agreement between UML and Nepali Congress under the leadership of Chairman Oli. Nepal gave rise to border dispute in 2020 by issuing a political map, showing Kalapani, Limpiadhura and Lipulekh as part of the country. India strongly refuted these claims.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal recently said that India’s situation has been consistent and clear. He said, ‘The border trade between India and China started in 1954 through Lipulekh Pass and has been going on for decades. In recent years, trade was interrupted due to Kovid-19 epidemic and other developments and now both sides have agreed to resume it.

Nepal banned social media forums like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, which failed to register in the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology within the stipulated time limit on Thursday (September 4, 2025). This information was issued by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of Nepal.

In the notice issued by the ministry, it was said that these social media companies were given seven days time from August 28 for registration. When the deadline ended on the night of Wednesday (September 3, 2025), no major social media forum submitted the application. This list includes the names of Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), Alphabet (YouTube), X, Redit and LinkedIn.

These social media platforms registered

However, according to the ministry, tickets, vibers, watches, Nimbaj and Popo Live have been listed, while Telegram and Global Diary have applied and they are in the process of approval. Facebook and other social media companies have not yet commented on the Nepal government’s decision.

Nepal government’s order will come into effect from midnight of 4 September

According to sources in the ministry, the decision to ban social media forums was taken in a meeting chaired by Communications and Information Technology Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung. These forums were not following the compulsory registration process under social network use management instructions, 2023.

The Ministry has also directed the Nepal Telecom Authority to neutralize unregistered social media platforms. Sources in the ministry said that the ban will come into effect from midnight on Thursday (September 4, 2025).

Ministry spokesperson made a statement about the government’s decision

Ministry spokesman Gajendra Kumar Thakur said, ‘All other social media platforms will be inactive in Nepal, except for five platforms listed and two platforms under process. If a platform completes registration, it will be opened again on the same day.

Observers said, “This decision will definitely affect millions of people living abroad, earning or learning, as most of them use social media platforms like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp for daily conversation.”

Fnj Objectioned the decision of the Nepal government

Meanwhile, the Nepali Journalist Federation (FNJ) objected to the government’s decision to ban these social media platforms and demanded immediate withdrawal of the decision.
