In many states of the country, the number of students in government schools is decreasing, while admissions in private schools are increasing continuously. This has become a matter of concern. The Ministry of Education of the Central Government discussed this in meetings with states in March and April. Especially under the overall education scheme, this issue arose while talking on projects of 2025-26.

Ministry officials made it clear that students are migrating from government schools in many states like Maharashtra, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttarakhand. In Maharashtra, enrollment in government and aided schools has decreased in 2023-24 compared to 2018-19. In Kerala too, the number of students studying in government schools is decreasing compared to 2022-23.

Statistics from Andhra Pradesh show that out of a total of 61,373 schools, about 73 percent are government, but only 46 percent of the students are in government schools, while in private schools more than 52 percent. Out of 42,901 schools in Telangana, 70 percent of the schools are government schools, but their stake in enrollment is only around 38 percent. At the same time, private schools have more than 60 percent students. The situation in Uttarakhand is also similar, where despite the high number of government schools, enrollment is less.

The Ministry of Education has asked these states to take concrete steps to go to the root of this problem and improve. The ministry said that the demand for private schools has increased after Kovid, as parents have started giving priority to private schools for better facilities and studies.

In Tamil Nadu too, government schools take only 37 percent in enrollment, despite being 64 percent of the total schools, while 46 percent of the students are admitted in private schools. The ministry has emphasized on branding of government schools in this situation so that the number of children there can increase.

Private schools are increasing popularity in young children

Kerala and Maharashtra have talked about cleaning data (through Aadhaar verification) regarding this deficiency, but the ministry is still concerned about this decline. In Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, enrollment in government and aided schools has also decreased. In union territories like Delhi, Andaman-Nicobar, Ladakh, Puducherry and Dadra Nagar Haveli, admission in private schools is more than government schools.

A senior official of the ministry said that small children have more admission in private schools in classes. We are requesting the states to find out the reasons for this migration and find solutions. The demand for private schools has increased as the parents’ aspirations have increased.

UDISE+ 2023-24 data

According to the data of UDISE+ 2023-24, out of a total of 24.80 crore students in the country, about 9 crore (36 percent) are studying in private schools. This percentage was 33 percent in 2022-23 and 2021-22. It was 37 percent in 2019-20 before Kovid.

This warning of the Ministry of Education states that the government will have to take fast steps to improve the quality of government schools, increase facilities and win confidence, otherwise the government education system can weaken. The challenge for the country is that he can provide equal and good education to all children, especially those families who are out of reach of private schools.
