The murder case of Hardeep Singh Nijjar is once again in the headlines. Conversations intercepted by British intelligence helped Canadian authorities establish links between India and the killing of a Khalistani leader, according to a new investigative documentary.

These claims, shown in the Bloomberg Originals documentary, have sparked a new debate amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to improve strained relations between India and Canada. According to the documentary, Britain’s electronic intelligence agency GCHQ intercepted the phone call, in which discussion was seen about three possible targets Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Avtar Singh Khanda and Gurpatwant Singh Pannu.

What is the claim of the documentary?
The documentary claims that these intercepts were shared with Canada in late July 2023 under the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance, which includes the UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The report states that this intelligence proved to be a breakthrough in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) investigation of Nijjar’s murder.

Intelligence given under strict conditions
The intelligence information was reportedly given under strict conditions. It was delivered personally to Ottawa and kept away from electronic systems. Intercepted conversations reportedly indicate that individuals working on behalf of the Indian government discussed how to successfully eliminate Nijjar.

These revelations have started a fresh investigation in Britain. The Sikh Federation UK has reportedly written to Security Minister Dan Jarvis seeking an explanation as to why British officials did not disclose this intelligence when asked by MPs representing the Sikh communities.

Canada accused of giving place to Khalistanis
India has denied any involvement in Nijjar’s murder and described the allegations as absurd and politically motivated. New Delhi has repeatedly accused Ottawa of giving space to extremist Khalistani elements from Canadian soil.
