The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a major climate warning for the world. The organization says that the sea water in the Pacific Ocean is becoming warmer than normal, due to which an El Niño situation is being created. This may affect the world’s temperature and rainfall patterns in the coming months. Due to this, weather related events like extreme heat, heavy rains, floods and drought may increase in many countries.

According to WMO, temperatures are likely to be above normal in almost all parts of the world from June to August 2026. According to the organization’s El Nino/La Nina update, there is an 80 percent chance of El Nino forming between June and August 2026. The probability of it continuing till at least November 2026 is said to be 90 percent or more. Although there remains some uncertainty about its peak strength and exact timing, most weather models suggest it will be at least moderate and possibly quite strong.

Also read: PAF Aircraft Crashed: PAF training aircraft crashes in Pakistan! Two killed, two pedestrians injured in accident

What did Antonio Guterres say about El Nino?

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in his video message that science clearly shows that El Nino is going to come with about 90 percent probability. He said that the world should consider this as a serious climate warning because the effect of El Nino on the already warming earth will make the situation more difficult. According to him, its effects will be more serious and it will affect beyond the borders of many countries. He said that the best solution is to take fast and effective steps to deal with climate change, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, promote renewable energy and strengthen the system of providing timely warnings to the people.

Statement by WMO Secretary General Celeste Saulo

WMO Secretary General Celeste Saulo said the world needs to prepare now for a possible strong El Nino. He said that due to this, incidents of both drought and heavy rains may increase in many areas. The risk of heatwave will also increase both on land and sea. They reminded that the 2023-24 El Niño was among the strongest El Niño events on record and played a significant role in the record global temperatures of 2024.

Sea surface temperature is continuously increasing
According to the WMO, sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern parts of the equatorial Pacific Ocean continued to rise during late April and May and approached the limits of El Nino. The water below the sea surface is also about 6 degrees Celsius warmer than normal, due to which the surface temperature is increasing further. For this reason the El Nino situation is developing rapidly. Along with this, the Southern Oscillation Index is also indicating the formation of El Nino.

Every El Nino is different – WMO

WMO said that El Nino and La Nina are two different phases of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This is one of the most powerful natural climate patterns on Earth. During El Nino, the waters of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become warmer than normal. It usually occurs once every two to seven years and can last for about nine to twelve months. It often develops between March and June and reaches its strongest between November and February. The greatest impact is usually visible the following year. However, every El Nino is different and its impact depends on its strength, timing and its relationship with other weather systems. Therefore, its impact is not the same in every country and every region. WMO also said that the term Super El Nino is not its official classification and the organization does not use it.

Flood situation may arise due to El Nino

According to WMO, due to El Nino, there may be more than normal rainfall and flood conditions in southern South America, parts of South America, Horn of Africa and Central Asia. There is a possibility of drought and below normal rainfall in Central America, Northern South America, Caribbean, Australia, Indonesia and some parts of Southern Asia.

sea storms will be affected

It can also have an impact on sea storms. During El Nino, storm activity may increase in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, while the likelihood of storm formation in the Atlantic Ocean may decrease. For this reason, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted a below normal hurricane season in the Atlantic region this year. WMO has also expressed concern for South Asia. According to the South Asian Climate Outlook Forum, monsoon rainfall is likely to be below normal in entire South Asia including India. At the same time, the Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum has also predicted below normal rainfall in its region. According to the Central America Climate Outlook Forum, there is a possibility of drier and hotter weather there.

WMO statement in Global Seasonal Climate Update

WMO has said in its Global Seasonal Climate Update that temperatures are expected to be above normal in almost all parts of the world during June, July and August. This may increase heat stress in many areas and drought conditions may develop rapidly in areas where rainfall is less. On the other hand, in areas where there is more rainfall, the risk of incidents like heavy rains and floods will increase. The organization says that timely weather forecasting and early warning systems are very important to save people’s lives, take right decisions in areas like farming, health, energy and water management and reduce economic losses. Therefore, governments and related agencies need to make preparations from now on.

Summer Health Tips: At present, the effect of intense heat and heatwave is being seen in many states of the country. According to the Meteorological Department, Nautapa is going to last from May 25 to June 2. During this time, the heat of the sun is considered to be the highest and the temperature can exceed 45 degrees in many areas. Keeping this in view, the Ministry of AYUSH and the Health Department have issued special advice for the people.

The ministry has suggested many home remedies to keep the body cool and hydrated. The most discussed among these is the advice of drinking milk mixed with sugar. The ministry says that it can help in giving energy to the body and protecting it from water deficiency. Apart from this, buttermilk, coconut water, lemon water, sattu and seasonal fruits have also been said to provide relief from heat.

Why is milk with sugar considered beneficial?

In extreme heat, water and essential minerals come out of the body through sweat. This causes problems like weakness, fatigue and dizziness. According to experts, essential elements like calcium, potassium, protein and water are found in milk, which help in giving strength to the body. Whereas sugar works to provide instant energy. For this reason, the Ministry of AYUSH has advised to drink milk with sugar during summer. Especially during the rainy season when the risk of heat stroke is high, it can give some relief to the body. Some doctors say that cold milk helps in cooling the body from inside and can reduce weakness. Even in Ayurveda, milk is considered to keep the body calm.

Experts advised to exercise caution

However, many doctors and nutrition experts have also said that sugary milk may not be right for every person. People who have diabetes, obesity or stomach related problems should avoid taking too much sugar. Some people also have difficulty in digesting milk. Experts say that it should be adopted only as a home remedy and not as a complete solution to avoid heatwave. Besides, doctors have also said that drinks like ORS, coconut water, buttermilk and lemonade are necessary. He says that the most important thing in summer is to ensure that there is no shortage of water and essential minerals in the body. Therefore, instead of relying only on sugary milk, it is important to eat a balanced diet and drink more water.

Take care of your health like this in Nautapa

The Ministry of AYUSH has advised people to avoid going out in the strong afternoon sun. Especially during Nautapa, the risk of heat stroke increases significantly. Along with this, it has also been advised to wear light cotton clothes, drink more water and eat less fried food. According to the ministry, indigenous drinks like watermelon, cucumber, muskmelon, wood apple juice and sattu help in keeping the body cool. At the same time, children and the elderly need to be more careful during this time because they are quickly affected by heat. Experts say that if proper eating habits and precautions are taken, the extreme heat of Nautapa can be avoided to a great extent.

Lucknow Summer Vacation: In view of the scorching heat and heatwave in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, the district administration has taken a big decision. The District Magistrate has declared summer holidays in the schools of all education boards from May 22, 2026. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the safety and health of children. The continuously increasing temperatures and hot winds have increased the problems of the people, especially for small children, it has become difficult to go out.

In the notice issued by the district administration, it is clearly stated that the Meteorological Department is continuously issuing warnings regarding heatwave, but some schools in the district are still open, which can have a negative impact on the health of the children. The administration has instructed all the officers to strictly follow the order. Besides, children have also been advised not to go out of the house during day time so that they can avoid strong hot winds.

Time table of schools changed from Delhi to UP

In view of the increasing impact of summer, many states have released the complete schedule of school holidays. It has been decided to keep schools closed in Delhi-NCR from 11 May to 30 June 2026. However, remedial classes are being held in the morning shift for classes 9th, 10th and 12th in the government schools of Delhi. Whereas in Uttar Pradesh, summer holidays have been declared from 20 May to 15 June. Schools will remain closed in Haryana from June 1 to June 30, in Rajasthan from May 17 to June 20 and in Bihar from June 1 to June 20. In view of the continuously increasing heat, parents are also supporting this decision.

Also read: Parent-Child Relationship: After scolding children, parents should not make this mistake even by mistake, the relationship of trust may break.

Holidays have already started in many states

The effect of heat is clearly visible in South India and eastern states also. Holidays have been declared in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh from 24 April to 11 June. In Chhattisgarh, schools are closed from April 20 to June 15, while in Odisha, holidays have started from April 27. In view of the scorching heat in many districts of West Bengal, holidays have been extended till May 31. The Meteorological Department is continuously advising people to remain alert. Doctors say that strong sunlight and heat wave can quickly affect children’s body, hence extra caution is very important at this time.

Return of El Nino may increase problems

Scientists believe that El Nino conditions may return again this year, although this has not been officially confirmed yet. If this happens then the temperature in the country may increase further. Along with this, there is also a possibility of increase in heat wave incidents and weak monsoon in many areas. This is the reason why governments and administrations seem to be alert than before. Keeping in mind the safety of children, the decision of school holidays has been taken so that they can be protected from the scorching heat and heat wave.

The maximum electricity demand in the country has reached a record level for the third consecutive day on Wednesday (20 May 2026) at 3:45 pm. The Ministry of Power said, the highest demand for electricity in the country reached 265.44 gigawatt (GW) on May 20, which was successfully fulfilled by the government without any interruption. This demand for electricity is a new record so far. Just a day before this, the demand for electricity had reached 260.45 GW, which was met. Today’s demand has left yesterday’s record behind.

Electricity record broken for the third consecutive day

The maximum power demand in the country reached an all-time high of 260.45 GW on Tuesday. The main reason for this was the increasing use of cooling devices like air conditioners (ACs) and desert coolers amid the scorching heat. According to the ministry, the maximum demand of 257.37 GW was recorded at 3:42 pm on Monday (18 May 2026) and it was met. This was more than the previous record demand of 256.1 GW recorded on April 25, 2026.

 Electricity demand may reach 270GW

The ministry estimates that the country’s maximum electricity demand this summer may reach 270 GW. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heat wave this week in large parts of north-west and central India where the temperature at many places reached more than 45 degrees Celsius on Monday.

According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of heat wave in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi from Monday to May 24, while in some parts of Uttar Pradesh, heat wave and severe heat wave conditions may occur from Tuesday. With increasing heat in Delhi, the maximum demand for electricity reached a record 7,776 MW on Tuesday. This is the highest demand so far this summer season.

The entire North India including Delhi is facing the scorching heat and heat wave. Due to this, normal life has become disrupted. For people, going out of the house has become like getting heated in a fiery furnace. The condition of Delhi is even worse. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), there does not seem to be any respite from the heat in the capital in the coming days. There will be severe heat in Delhi on Saturday (April 25) and the general public will face problems due to heat wave.

According to the Meteorological Department, there has not been much change in the maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi in the last 24 hours. During this period, the minimum temperature was recorded between 23 to 26 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature was recorded between 42–43 degrees Celsius. However, in many areas of Delhi the temperature was 1.6 to 3.0 degrees Celsius above normal.

Severe heat from Noida to Varanasi in UP, heat wave alert in 40 districts, weather will change from April 26

How will be the temperature of Delhi today?

According to IMD, the minimum temperature of Delhi is expected to be between 25 to 27 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature is expected to be between 42 to 44 degrees Celsius. During this period the wind speed is expected to be 15–25 km/hour. Today the sky is likely to be partly cloudy and there may be strong winds and dust storms in some areas, which is likely to affect visibility. Overall, today is expected to be a very hot day for the people of Delhi.

avoid leaving the house

In view of the rising temperatures and heatwave, the Meteorological Department has advised people to exercise caution. Strong sunlight can especially affect children and the elderly. In such a situation, it is advised to leave the house only when absolutely necessary. It has been advised to avoid going out between 12 noon to 4 pm. At the same time, the health department has advised people to drink adequate amount of water. To avoid dehydration, people have been asked to wear cotton clothes and keep their heads covered.

Temperature rises even in the mountains in Himachal, but the weather will take a turn, yellow alert of rain and storm in these areas

The heat in India has made us miserable in the month of April itself. Tourists have disappeared from Udaipur in Rajasthan and the roads are deserted. School timings changed due to heat wave alert in 26 districts of Uttar Pradesh. The temperature went above 40 degrees Celsius in 9 districts of Bihar. There is a heat wave alert everywhere including Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Punjab, Jharkhand and Himachal Pradesh. For the first time in Madhya Pradesh, an ultimatum of heat wave has been given at night. But heat wave occurs in sunlight, then what is the matter of heat wave at night? You will know in the explainer…

Question 1: How terrible is the summer situation in India right now?
answer: In many areas of the country, the heat has broken records in the last week of April 2026. In many places in states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Bihar, the temperature has crossed 40 to 44 degrees Celsius. The mercury has risen to 44.4 degrees in Prayagraj, 43.8 degrees in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh and 42-43 degrees at many places. The Meteorological Department has issued a heat wave alert in these states. The most important thing is that for the first time on Tuesday, an alert of ‘night heat’ i.e. hot night was issued in Madhya Pradesh.

This alert is in 16 districts of Madhya Pradesh including Bhopal, Chhindwara, Mandla, Narmadapuram, Gwalior, Ratlam and Chhatarpur. Earlier, on Sunday-Tuesday nights, the night temperature in these areas was much higher than normal, due to which people did not get relief even after the heat of the day. In Maharashtra and Odisha, signals were switched off during the day, so that people do not have to stand in the sun at intersections.

Night heat alert continues in 16 districts of Madhya Pradesh

Question 2: Heat wave always occurs in the daytime and hot air, then what is the heat wave like at night?
answer: Normal heat wave occurs during the day. It is bright sunshine and hot, dry air that reaches 40 degrees or above in the afternoon, but ‘night heat’ or ‘hot night’ is completely different. It does not flow like the wind, but the temperature at night remains so high that even after the sun sets, the walls, ground and air do not cool down.

According to the rules of the Meteorological Department, when the day temperature is 40 degrees or more and the minimum temperature at night is 4.5 to 6.4 degrees more than normal, then it is called ‘hot night’. If it is more than 6.4 degrees then ‘very hot night’. This is what is happening in Madhya Pradesh. The heat persists even at night, there is no coolness.

Question 3: What is the effect of night heat on the body as compared to day?
answer: Yes, the heat at night causes more harm secretly than the heat of the day. The body gets hot during the day, but if the temperature does not drop at night, the body does not get a chance to cool down. The system that controls body temperature gets tired. This increases pressure on the heart, kidneys and brain. People are unable to sleep due to restlessness, sweat more and feel tired as soon as they wake up in the morning.

In severe cases, symptoms of dizziness, vomiting, unconsciousness and heat stroke may appear. According to the Meteorological Department and doctors, sleep is not complete during hot nights, due to which the body becomes weak the next day. Especially the elderly, children, pregnant women and already ill people are more affected.

Question 4: Is night heat considered more dangerous than day heat? If yes then why?
answer: The heat is intense during the day, but there is relief at night. The body gets time to recover due to coolness at night, but this recovery does not happen when the night is also hot. Heat stress continues to increase. Many research studies have been done on this, according to which due to climate change the nights are getting warmer faster than the days. Due to high humidity in the air, the heat of the day gets trapped at night. Concrete and buildings in cities absorb heat during the day and release it at night.

outcome? The risk of death increases if there is continuous heat for several days. According to another study, if the heat at night increases, deaths due to heat may increase six times by the end of the century. The heat at night also takes away sleep. On average, every person is sleeping 44 hours less in a year.

Question 5: How long will you have to struggle with night heat and what to do to avoid it?
answer: In case of night heat, symptoms like excessive thirst, fatigue, headache, dizziness, vomiting, increased body temperature, confusion or unconsciousness may be seen. If you sweat excessively at night, cannot sleep or feel weak in the morning, then be careful:

Drink more water even at night.

Wear light, loose clothes.

Run a fan or cooler in the room, keep the windows open.

Do not go out between 12 noon to 4 pm.

Keep a special eye on the elderly and children.

Beds are being reserved in hospitals. In many states, school timings have been changed and workers are not being allowed to work in the afternoon.

According to the Meteorological Department, heat will persist in North and Central India for the next 4-5 days. Alert of heat wave and hot nights continues in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Odisha. Due to climate change, such weather has become more common than before. If it does not rain, the situation may worsen. Governments and meteorological departments are continuously monitoring. People are being advised not to take the heat lightly, it can silently kill.

Night heat is not a wind, but non-stop heat throughout the night which does not give the body a chance to cool down. Unlike daytime heat, it continuously increases fatigue and proves to be more dangerous in the long run. This alert was issued for the first time in Madhya Pradesh because the night temperature is much higher than normal.

In many states of the country, the heat is at its peak and the capital Delhi is also not untouched by this. The temperature here has crossed 45 degrees Celsius. In such a situation, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert of Lu (Heatwave) in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and parts of Uttar Pradesh. Actually, cases of heatstroke are increasing due to the scorching heat. In such a situation, know what to do and what not to do to avoid the heat in this hot summer of Delhi?

what is heat and why it is dangerous?

Lu is also called heat stroke or sun stroke. This is a condition in which body temperature is more than 40 ° C (104 ° F). This happens when the body is unable to bear external heat and the system of controlling its temperature fails. According to experts, heat can cause dehydration, multi-organ dysfunction and death in severe cases. Children, elderly, pregnant women and already sick people come quickly in the grip of heat.

Why does Delhi feel more heat?

Many research has revealed that due to ‘Heat Island Effect’ in urban areas like Delhi, the effect of heat is increased. Actually, here, concrete forests, vehicles emissions, and lack of greenery increase the temperature.

This is how the symptoms of heat stroke are

Body temperature is more than 104 & deg; f (40 & deg; c).

Skin to be red, warm, and dry. Sweating stops.

Headache and dizziness, even the problem of unconsciousness in severe cases.

Nausea and vomiting, problems of stomach cramps.

Walking sharp pulse and difficulty in breathing as well as the body’s oxygen balance deteriorates.

Muscle cramps due to dehydration.

In these ways you can protect against heat

Keep the body hydrated: Drink at least three to four liters of water a day. To avoid dehydration, drink some water every 30 minutes. Apart from this, you can complete the deficiency of electrolytes by drinking ORS, lemonade, coconut water or sattu syrup.

sunshine prevention: If there is no necessary work, then stay in the house from 11 am to 4 pm. During this time the risk of heat is the highest. If the work is very important, then get out using the umbrella, cap, or cotton scarf.

Diet change: Eat things like curd, buttermilk, lassi, cucumber, watermelon and mint. This keeps the body cool and protects against heat. At the same time, raw mangoes balance electrolytes.
