Left army job and chose the path of music

After completing school education, Madan Mohan served as Second Lieutenant in the Indian Army in the year 1943. After the Second World War ended, he left the army (a two-year tenure) and dedicated his life to music. After this he worked as a program assistant in All India Radio, Lucknow and Delhi. During this time, he got the opportunity to work and learn from great artists like Ustad Faiyaz Khan, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Begum Akhtar and Talat Mehmood.

He started his film journey as an assistant musician. In the year 1950, he got recognition as an independent musician with the film ‘Aankhen’. After this, in films like ‘Ada’, ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’, ‘Sharabi’, ‘Woh Kaun Thi?’, ‘Mera Saaya’, ‘Haqeeqat’, ‘Dastak’, ‘Heer Ranjha’, ‘Mausam’ and ‘Laila Majnu’, he gave such music, which even today people listen to with great interest.

Madan Mohan is especially remembered for giving new heights to ghazals in Hindi films. A wonderful combination of depth of classical music, sweetness of emotions and sensitivity of words was visible in his tunes. He gave many classic songs with legendary singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor and Hemant Kumar. The decade of 1960 and 1970 is considered to be the most successful and memorable time of Madan Mohan’s music career. During this period, he gave classic music in films like ‘Woh Kaun Thi?’, ‘Haqiqat’, ‘Mera Saaya’, ‘Dastak’, ‘Heer Ranjha’, ‘Hanste Zakhm’ and ‘Mausam’. Chetan Anand Changed the Face Of Indian Cinema: भारतीय सिनेमा के सुनहरे पन्नों में कुछ नाम ऐसे हैं, जो न केवल कला के प्रति संवेदनशीलता, बल्कि अपनी दूरदर्शिता के लिए भी याद किए जाते हैं. चेतन आनंद, एक ऐसा नाम है, जिन्होंने नई सोच को पर्दे पर उतारकर भारतीय सिनेमा को वैश्विक मंच पर स्थापित किया. 6 जुलाई को उनकी पुण्यतिथि है. वह एक ऐसी शख्सियत थे, जिन्होंने न सिर्फ कमाल की फिल्में परोसी, बल्कि राजेश खन्ना जैसे पहले सुपरस्टार को भी दुनिया के सामने लाया.

3 जनवरी 1921 को लाहौर (पाकिस्तान) में एक वकील पिशोरी लाल आनंद के घर जन्मे चेतन आनंद ने अपनी पढ़ाई गुरुकुल कांगड़ी विश्वविद्यालय और लाहौर के गवर्नमेंट कॉलेज से पूरी की। हिंदू शास्त्रों और अंग्रेजी साहित्य में उनकी गहरी रुचि थी.

1930 के दशक में वह भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस से जुड़े, फिर दून स्कूल में पढ़ाया. लेकिन, उनकी असली मंजिल थी सिनेमा. 1940 के दशक में उन्होंने सम्राट अशोक पर एक स्क्रिप्ट लिखी, जो उन्हें मुंबई ले आई. यहीं से शुरू हुआ उनका वह सिनेमाई सफर, जिसने भारतीय सिनेमा को एक नई दिशा दी.

पहली ही फिल्म से रच दिया इतिहास

चेतन आनंद ने अपने पहले ही कदम में इतिहास रच दिया. उनकी साल 1946 में आई डेब्यू फिल्म ‘नीचा नगर’ ने न केवल भारतीय सिनेमा को वैश्विक पहचान दिलाने में मदद की, बल्कि कान्स फिल्म फेस्टिवल में ग्रैंड प्रिक्स (अब पाल्म डी’ओर) पुरस्कार जीतकर भारत का नाम रोशन किया.

यह फिल्म, जो मैक्सिम गोर्की के नाटक ‘लोअर डेप्थ्स’ से प्रेरित थी, सामाजिक यथार्थवाद का एक मजबूत उदाहरण थी. इसने पानी के नियंत्रण के जरिए गरीबों के शोषण की कहानी को पर्दे पर पेश किया. इस फिल्म ने कामिनी कौशल और पंडित रवि शंकर जैसे सितारों को सिनेमा जगत में खास स्थान दिलाने में मदद की.

भाई देवानंद के साथ नवकेतन प्रोडक्शन की शुरुआत की

साल 1949 में चेतन ने अपने छोटे भाई देवानंद के साथ नवकेतन प्रोडक्शंस की स्थापना की, जिसने हिंदी सिनेमा को कई यादगार फिल्में दीं. उनकी पहली फिल्म साल 1950 में आई ‘अफसर’ थी, जिसमें देवानंद और सुरैया ने अभिनय किया. इसके बाद 1954 में आई ‘टैक्सी ड्राइवर’, जो सफल थी. इस फिल्म ने न केवल दर्शकों का दिल जीता, बल्कि एसडी. बर्मन को सर्वश्रेष्ठ संगीत के लिए फिल्मफेयर पुरस्कार भी दिलाया.

‘आंधियां’ और ‘फंटूश’ जैसी फिल्मों ने उनकी बहुमुखी प्रतिभा को दर्शकों के सामने पेश किया. 1957 में चेतन ने ‘अर्पण’ और ‘अंजलि’ जैसी फिल्मों का निर्देशन किया, जिनमें उन्होंने खुद भी अभिनय किया.

1960 में चेतन ने अपनी प्रोडक्शन कंपनी हिमालया फिल्म्स शुरू की और संगीतकार मदन मोहन, गीतकार कैफी आजमी और एक्ट्रेस प्रिया राजवंश के साथ एक ऐसी टीम बनाई, जिसने हिंदी सिनेमा को कुछ अनमोल रत्न दिए.

हकीकत: भारत की पहली युद्ध फिल्म 

‘हकीकत’ 1964 में आई, जो भारत की पहली पूर्ण लंबाई वाली युद्ध फिल्म रही और इसने 1962 के भारत-चीन युद्ध की पृष्ठभूमि में देशभक्ति और युद्ध के सीन को दिखाया. इस फिल्म ने लद्दाख की 15,000 फीट ऊंचाई पर शूटिंग के साथ तकनीकी और कथानक के स्तर पर नए मानदंड स्थापित किए. इसे 1965 में नेशनल अवॉर्ड फॉर सेकंड बेस्ट फीचर फिल्म मिला. इसी फिल्म के जल मिस्त्री को बेस्ट सिनेमैटोग्राफी के लिए फिल्मफेयर अवॉर्ड मिला.

चेतन आनंद का सबसे बड़ा योगदान रहा राजेश खन्ना को सिनेमा जगत में लाना. फिल्म निर्माता ने एक एक्टिंग कॉम्पटिशन में राजेश खन्ना को खोजा और साल 1966 में आई फिल्म ‘आखिरी खत’ में पहला ब्रेक दिया.

इसके बाद चेतन ने राजेश खन्ना को साल 1981 में रिलीज फिल्म ‘कुदरत’ में मौका दिया. पिछले जन्म की थीम पर आधारित इस फिल्म का गाना ‘हमें तुमसे प्यार कितना’ आज भी लोगों को याद है. परवीन सुल्ताना ने इस गाने के लिए बेस्ट फीमेल सिंगर का फिल्मफेयर पुरस्कार जीता था.

चेतन आनंद की जिंदगी का एक महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा थीं अभिनेत्री प्रिया राजवंश, जिन्हें उन्होंने ‘हकीकत’ के दौरान खोजा. प्रिया ने चेतन की हर फिल्म में काम किया, और दोनों का रिश्ता जीवन भर रहा. हालांकि, चेतन अपनी पत्नी उमा आनंद से अलग हो चुके थे और कानूनी कारणों से प्रिया के साथ विवाह नहीं कर सके. चेतन ने प्रिया को मुंबई के जुहू में अपने बंगले में आजीवन रहने का अधिकार दिया था.

हीर रांझा और अन्य यादगार फिल्में 

चेतन की अन्य महत्वपूर्ण फिल्मों में ‘हीर रांझा’, ‘हंसते जख्म’ और ‘हिंदुस्तान की कसम’ शामिल हैं. ‘हीर रांझा’ के गाने, जैसे ‘मिलो न तुम तो हम घबराएं’ और ‘यह दुनिया यह महफिल’ आज भी लोकप्रिय हैं. साल 1988 में चेतन ने दूरदर्शन के लिए ‘परम वीर चक्र’ सीरियल बनाया, जिसमें भारत के परम वीर चक्र विजेताओं की कहानियां दिखाई गईं. इस टीवी शो को दर्शकों से खूब सराहना मिली.

चेतन आनंद को उनके सिनेमाई योगदान के लिए कई सम्मान मिले. 1995 में कान्स फिल्म फेस्टिवल ने ‘नीचा नगर’ की गोल्डन जुबली मनाने के लिए चेतन को विशेष सम्मान दिया.

चेतन आनंद की सिनेमाई विरासत आज भी जिंदा है. उनकी पत्नी उमा आनंद और बेटे केतन आनंद ने साल 2006 में उनकी जीवनी ‘चेतन आनंद: द पोएटिक्स ऑफ फिल्म’ प्रकाशित की और साल 2008 में एक डॉक्यूमेंट्री भी बनाई. चेतन आनंद का 6 जुलाई 1997 में निधन हो गया था.
