US President Donald Trump has supported allowing foreign students to study in America. He said that it not only keeps the education system of the country strong, but is also very beneficial economically. While talking to Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Trump said that if the admission of foreign students is cut, many American universities will be closed.

Trump said, “If you stop half the students from all over the world, our colleges and universities will be destroyed. I don’t want to do that. It is good for students from outside countries to come, because we should keep pace with the whole world.”

He claimed that half of America’s universities could be closed due to reducing the number of students from China and other countries. According to Trump, foreign students contribute trillions of dollars to the American economy and pay twice the fees as domestic students. He said, “I want to see our education system flourishing. It is not just a matter of inviting students, but it is a business model.”

Visa rules for international students strict

However, this statement has come at a time when the Trump administration has tightened the visa rules for international students. Thousands of visas have been canceled and some foreign students have been arrested or deported due to pro-Palestine activities.

When Ingraham suggested that reducing the number of foreign students would increase seats for American students, Trump disagreed. He said this would cause huge harm to small colleges and black historical universities.

Marco Rubio had taken a big decision

On the other hand, Foreign Minister Marco Rubio had earlier this year given instructions to temporarily stop student visa interviews. Now the administration is working on a new policy called Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education, under which it plans to limit the number of foreign students to 15% of the total undergraduate admissions and not allow more than 5% students from any one country. India’s ancient medical system Ayurveda will now become a part of the science syllabus of schools. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has included chapters related to Ayurveda in the science books of classes 6 to 8 on the instructions of the Central Government. In these new chapters, students will be given information about Ayurvedic principles of daily routine, menstruation, food and health. Its objective is that children can understand the traditional scientific thinking of India along with modern science.

NCERT Director Professor Dinesh Prasad Saklani said that the objective of these changes is to promote holistic education. He said that Ayurveda is not just a method of treatment but a lifestyle, which emphasizes on balance between body, mind and environment. In the third chapter of the new science book ‘Curiosity’ of class 8, students have been told how proper daily routine, nutritious diet, regular exercise and mental peace are important for a healthy life.

These lessons included in the syllabus

According to the information, the Class 6 book includes principles inspired by texts like ‘Ashtanga Hridaya Sutra Sthan’. It mentions the classification of substances and twenty opposing qualities (principles of qualities), so that students can develop an understanding of the relationship between nature and the body.

Plan for higher education also

Apart from this, University Grants Commission (UGC) is also preparing Ayurveda based courses for higher education. Union AYUSH Minister Prataprao Jadhav said that NCERT and UGC are jointly preparing an integrated course from school to university level, so that students can understand Ayurveda from a scientific point of view.

What is the government’s plan?

AYUSH Minister Prataprao Jadhav said that special training programs are also being started for teachers, which will include workshops, handbooks and orientation sessions. He told that Indian knowledge system has already been linked to education in states like Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It is noteworthy that in the New Education Policy 2020 also, emphasis was laid on including traditional knowledge systems of India in the curriculum. Now a big step has been taken in the same direction by making Ayurveda a part of science education. It will now become easier for Indian students to obtain a foreign degree. A big announcement regarding education has been made in the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and Britain. Under this, now top universities of UK will start their campuses in India. Gurugram Campus of Southampton University is already functioning and now 8-9 more new campuses will be opened from 2026. These include major cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Gurgaon. For example – University of Liverpool in Bengaluru. Campuses of University of York, Aberdeen and Bristol can open in Mumbai. This scheme is being implemented under NEP 2020 i.e. New Education Policy. While there are more than 4 crore students in higher education in India, 7 crore seats will be needed by 2035. Why should the reservation limited to government institutions only? The same question has now been raised by the Standing Committee on Education of Parliament. The committee headed by Digvijay Singh presented its report in Parliament and clearly stated that reservation should be necessary for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) students in private higher education institutions.

The committee has suggested that Parliament enacts a law under which 15% reservation for SC students in private colleges and universities, 7.5% for ST students and 27% for OBC students can be ensured.

There is a provision in the constitution, but not implemented

The report made it clear that Article 15 (5) of the Constitution, which was linked to the 93rd amendment by the Manmohan Singh government in 2006, gives the government the right to make reservation in private higher education institutions. In 2014, Article 15 (5) was also valid by the Supreme Court in Pramuti Educational and Cultural Trust vs. India case. That is, the way to implement reservation in private institutions is already open. Despite this, Parliament has not yet passed any such law that will force the private higher education institution to give reservation for SC, ST and OBC students.

Very low representation in private institutions

The committee said in its report that the representation of marginalized communities in the top private colleges and universities of the country is very low. According to the data, the number of SC students is less than 1%. The presence of ST students is around half percent. At the same time, the share of OBC students is limited to about 11%.

What do experts say?

Experts say that today Private Higher Education Institutes are ahead in terms of research, technology and international cooperation. Students get better opportunities from studying here. But students of social and economically backward classes do not reach these institutions. The big reason for this is the lack of more fees and reservation. If reservation is implemented in private institutions, then SC, ST and OBC students will not only get admission but will also get equal opportunities.
