The matter of controversy arising out of the video of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reached the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Surya Kant, while making an important comment on the petitions, said that when the elections are over, political battles start in the Supreme Court also. Communist Party of India (Marxist) and CPI leader Anni Raja have filed a petition demanding action against Himanta Biswa Sarma. In the petition, the Assam CM has been accused of targeting a particular community.

The petitioner’s lawyer requested for an early hearing, referring to the anti-Muslim video controversy of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Advocate Nizam Pasha told the court, ‘We appeal for your immediate intervention regarding the objectionable comments made by Himanta Biswa Sarma. Recently a video of his also surfaced, in which he is seen firing at people of a particular community. A complaint has been lodged against him, but no FIR. ‘

CJI ready to hear
According to the report of Live Law, CJI Surya Kant agreed to hear the arguments of the lawyer, but he expressed concern that when the elections are near, then political battles reach the court also. Assuring a hearing, the Chief Justice said, ‘We will hear, but the problem is that when elections come, a part of it is fought in the court. We will give you a date.

What is Himanta Biswa Sarma’s video controversy?
On February 7, Assam BJP had posted a video on social media platform X, but it was removed after some time. In the video, Himanta Biswa Sarma was seen with a rifle in his hand. Along with this, an AI generated part was also added, in which bullets were shown being fired on pictures of two men wearing beards and white caps. As soon as the video surfaced, Congress expressed strong objection to it. Even in the Parliament, the opposition created a ruckus regarding this.

What’s in the petition?
CPIM and Anni Raja have filed separate writ petitions, demanding registration of FIR against Himanta Biswa Sarma accusing him of hate speech and communal polarization. Besides, an appeal has also been made to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case. It has been said in the petition that an impartial and independent investigation cannot be expected from the investigating agencies of the Center and the State.

The controversy has deepened after a video shared by Assam BJP on social media. After the controversy escalated, this video was deleted, but despite this the matter has not calmed down. In this video, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was shown targeting two people wearing caps, on which the opposition has expressed strong objection. It is noteworthy that assembly elections are to be held in Assam this year. In such a situation, this video is being linked to the election environment. Opposition parties allege that this video is spreading hatred in the society.
