The Supreme Court has given big relief to Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (HIMSR). The court has given permission to continue the admission process for MBBS and Post Graduate Medical seats for the academic session 2026-27. After this decision of the court, the way has now been cleared for admission to 150 MBBS and 49 post graduate medical seats in the institute.

Justice B.V. A bench of Justice Nagarathna and Justice Ujjwal Bhuyan said in its order that Jamia Hamdard (Deemed to be University) will be deemed to have given consent for ‘deemed affiliation’ in favor of HIMSR. But the court has also said that this arrangement will be subject to the final decision of the ongoing dispute between the two branches of the Hamdard family.

What is the whole matter?

This controversy has come to light regarding the management and administrative control of HIMSR. In fact, many administrative differences had arisen after the operation of the institutions associated with the Hamdard group was divided between different branches of the family. Meanwhile, Jamia Hamdard had withdrawn the affiliation consent given to HIMSR citing University Grants Commission (UGC) rules and some other objections.

This decision started affecting the admission process of medical colleges. The institute also faced problems in accessing the National Medical Commission (NMC) portal and other administrative permissions.

The case reached the Supreme Court

Let us tell you that the matter reached the Supreme Court in January 2026, when the counseling process for admission to postgraduate medical courses was about to begin. At that time, keeping in mind the interests of the students, the court had directed NMC to include 49 post graduate seats of HIMSR in the counseling process so that the seats do not remain vacant.

After this, on February 11, 2026, the Supreme Court, while recognizing the admission of 49 PG students, had accepted that the consent of affiliation exists in favor of the institute. However, this arrangement was also dependent on the final decision of the case.

Relief also given for 2026-27 session

At the same time, now the Supreme Court has implemented the same system for the academic year 2026-27. The court said that consent of affiliation will be deemed to be in favor of HIMSR, which will enable the institute to complete the admission process to its 150 MBBS and 49 post graduate seats.

The court also directed that enrollment numbers be issued to 49 post graduate students already enrolled. Besides, instructions have also been given to restore the institute’s access to the NMC portal and accept the necessary academic documents.
