Why is the wife called ‘Vamangi’: In the scriptures, the wife has been called ‘Vamangi’, which means the possessor of the left side of the husband. It is believed that the woman was born from the left part of Lord Shiva. Its symbol is seen in the Ardhanarishwar form of Shiva, where half of the body is of Shiva and half is of Shakti. Therefore the bride is given a place on the left side of the husband.

Beliefs related to heart: It is said that a man’s heart is on the left side of the body. That is why the bride is made to sit on the left side of the husband, so that it is believed that she always remains in the husband’s heart. According to this belief, love and intimacy increases in the relationship between husband and wife.

The left direction is considered a symbol of love: In Hinduism, the left direction and the left hand are considered a symbol of love, tenderness and understanding. Therefore, making the bride sit on the left side is a sign that love and harmony will remain between husband and wife after marriage.

Tradition related to Vishnu and Lakshmi: According to another belief, Goddess Lakshmi always sits on the left side of Lord Vishnu. In marriage, the groom is considered to be the form of Vishnu and the bride is considered to be the form of Lakshmi. Therefore, seating the bride on the left side is considered an auspicious sign of happiness, wealth and good fortune in the house.

Symbol of husband-wife relationship: If we look at all these beliefs together, then the bride sitting on the left side is not just a ritual but shows the depth of the relationship. It tells that the wife brings love, respect and auspiciousness in the life of the husband, and this continues throughout the married life.
