India has made great achievements in expanding its indigenous defense industry with the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives. The latest report released by global think tank Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) on Monday (December 1, 2025) contains a list of the top 100 arms manufacturing companies around the world, in which the names of three Indian companies have also been included.

Which Indian companies are included in the list?,

According to the latest report of SIPRI, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which manufactures Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas fighter jet in India, is ranked 44th in the list of 100 top arms manufacturing companies in the world. At the same time, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), which manufacturers radar and electronic warfare systems, is at 58th position. Mazagon Dockyard Limited (MDL), which manufactures warships and submarines in India, is ranked 91st in SIPRI’s list.

4 American companies among top-5 arms companies

According to the report, four of the world’s top-5 arms manufacturing companies are from America alone, which includes Lockheed Martin, RTX, Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics. One of the first five companies is England based BAE Systems, which is at fourth place in the list.

Record level income from military arms and services in 2024

Global thinktank SIPRI has released its new report titled ‘The SIPRI Top 100 Arms-Producing and Military Services Companies, 2024’ on Monday (December 1, 2025). According to which, the income from sales of the world’s top 100 arms and military services manufacturing companies has reached a record figure of $ 679 billion in 2024.

Talking about the income of America’s top-3 arms companies Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics, the combined income of these three American companies increased by 3.8 percent to reach $334 billion in 2024. 39 American companies are included in the list of world’s top 100 companies, out of which 30 companies have registered an increase in their income.

A new dimension is going to be added to India-Russia relations and indigenous aviation sector. Indigenous government aviation company HAL has signed an agreement with Russia to manufacture Sukhoi Superjet (SJ-100) passenger aircraft. This agreement was signed in Moscow on Tuesday (October 28, 2025) in the presence of DK Sunil, CMD of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

HAL issued an official statement saying that these SJ-100 (Sukhoi Superjet) aircraft will be used for short distance connectivity under the UDAN scheme. However, HAL did not clarify how many aircraft have been agreed to be manufactured in India and when the production will start, but the aviation company definitely said that currently around 200 aircraft are required in the country under the UDAN scheme. Also, if international tourist destinations in the Indian Ocean region (like Sri Lanka, Maldives etc.) are added to this, then 350 additional aircraft will be required.

Russia-India’s first agreement on manufacturing civil aircraft

The two-in engine SJ-100 aircraft is manufactured by Russian government company, Public Joint Stock Company United Aircraft Corporation (PHSC-UAC). In Russia, 200 such aircraft are used by 16 commercial airlines for domestic flights.

According to HAL, SJ-100 will prove to be a game changer for short distance flights. Also, the partnership between HAL and UAC is the result of trust in each other. HAL has indigenously manufactured about 250 Sukhoi fighter aircraft and 600 MiG-21 fighter jets for the Indian Air Force under license from Russia. But this is the first agreement of its kind with Russia for civil aircraft.

India moving towards self-reliance in civil aviation sector

This is also the first civil aircraft for HAL. At present, apart from indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, HAL manufactures Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachanda, Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv and HTT (trainer) aircraft. These are all military aircraft. However, in 1961, HAL also manufactured the Avro (AVRO HS-748) passenger aircraft. But this project was stopped in 1988.

According to HAL, the construction of SJ-100 aircraft is the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Indian aviation industry. This is a step towards realizing the dream of ‘self-reliant India’ in the civil aviation sector. Manufacturing will also strengthen the private sector and create direct and indirect employment opportunities in the aviation industry.

The country has made a mega deal of about 120 Tejas MK2 fighter aircraft from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). With the involvement of these aircraft, the fleet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) will be more powerful. HAL has made it clear that the company will hand over 30 fighter jets to the Air Force every year, so that the old MIG-29, Mirage-2000 and Jaguar aircraft can be filled in time. It is estimated that the final order of the Indian Air Force (IAF) may be more than 200 aircraft. This step is a major achievement towards India’s military modernization and self -sufficiency in the defense sector.

Tejas MK2 will replace old fighter jets

The Indian Air Force is going to remove its old fighter aircraft in the coming years. These include Russia’s MIG-29, France’s Mirage-20000 and Anglo-French’s Jaguar. Their total number is about 230. After these aircraft retires, the Air Force will need new modern aircraft and Tejas MK2 will be included to meet this need.

What is HAL’s plan?

The Indian Air Force has initially ordered 120 Tejas MK2 order to HAL, but the number of old aircraft is close to 230, so the final order can be more than 200. HAL is planning to increase its production capacity keeping this possibility in mind.

What is special in Tejas MK2?

Tejas MK2 is a 4.5 generation of medium weight multi-rol fighter aircraft. This Tejas is more powerful and modern than MK1A. It will have a General Electric F414 engine, which will make it more powerful. It will have the UTTAM AESA radar made in the country, which will greatly increase the capacity to monitor and target the target. This aircraft will also be able to use modern weapons, including India’s own long -range Astra missile. Tejas MK2 has been designed in such a way that it can fill the technical gap between existing aircraft and the fifth generation AMCA aircraft to be built in the future.

How many Tejas will be ready every year?

According to the report of the website named Defense.com, HAL has already prepared three assembly lines for Tejas MK1A. 30 aircraft will be made every year by 2028 from these lines. For Tejas MK2, HAL has fixed the initial production rate of 24 aircraft per year. Accordingly, the Air Force will get 120 aircraft by 2036. If the final order is more than 200, HAL will increase its capacity to 30 aircraft per year. In this way, delivery of a large number of aircraft can be completed on time.

Large partnership in engine manufacture

The engines for Tejas MK2 will be made in India only. For this, there has been a historic agreement between HAL and American company General Electric. Under this agreement, the GE F414 engines will be prepared under license production in India itself. This is a big step towards self -sufficient Bharat Abhiyan.

When will the first Tejas fighter jet fly?

Tejas MK2 development works are moving fast. The first flight of this fighter jet is likely to be held in the year 2027. After this, its serial production will be started from 2031. The scheme will play an important role in meeting the war capacity and future needs of the Indian Air Force.

HAL’s operational revenue in the January-March quarter stood at Rs 13,700 crore, which is 7.2 percent less than Rs 14,769 crore in the fourth quarter of FY 24.

In Q3 FY25, tax-after-profit (PAT) has increased from Rs 1,440 crore to Rs 1,440 crore from Rs 1,440 crore in the third quarter of FY 2025. The company’s revenue increased 97 percent during the October 2025 October-December quarter of Rs 6,957 crore.

In this entire business year, HAL’s net profit increased by Rs 7,621 crore in FY 2024 to Rs 8,364 crore as against Rs 7,621 crore. The operational revenue was Rs 30,981 crore, which is 2 percent more than Rs 30,381 crore for the previous financial year.
