Dharmanath Prasad Kohli not only laid the foundation of this agency but also decided the character of its work. The identity of the organization we know today as CBI, its working style and its credibility began with D.P. It is considered to be from the era of Kohli only.

The day of April 1, 1963 is considered special in Indian administrative history. On the same day, Dharmanath Prasad Kohli took charge as the first director of the country’s new Central Investigation Agency. He remained on this post till 31 May 1968. Before this, he was the Inspector General of Police of the Special Police Establishment (SPE) from 1955 to 1963. This SPE later became CBI.

According to reports, before that Kohli had also been the police chief in big states like Central India and Uttar Pradesh. His identity was already strong due to law and order, investigative skills and administrative honesty. This experience became a major reason for handing over the command of CBI to him.

Kohli had given a clear message to the CBI officials that the public has the highest expectations of efficiency and integrity from you, never let this trust be broken. The Government of India honored him with the Padma Bhushan in 1967.

D.P. Remembering Kohli’s contribution, CBI organizes “D.P. Kohli Memorial Lecture” every year in Delhi since 1999. In this, senior officials of the country, law experts and people associated with investigating agencies are involved.

According to reports, in the 1960s, the salary of top officers was between Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 per month. Along with this, some government allowances were also available. This amount may seem small today, but at that time it was considered a huge amount.
