Today, when we talk about the security of the country, the strength of the army and the big responsibilities of the Defense Ministry, it is important to remember who first took over the reins of this ministry after independence. The name of the person who got this responsibility was Sardar Baldev Singh. He not only became the first Defense Minister of the country, but was also among the leaders who played an important role during the freedom struggle and partition of the country.

Sardar Baldev Singh was born on 11 July 1902 in Dumna village of Ropar district of Punjab. His family was respectable and prosperous. His father Sir Inder Singh was a big industrialist. He completed his early education near the village, then completed his education from Khalsa College, Amritsar. After studies, he joined his father’s steel industry and gradually became the director of the company. Along with success in business, he also had the feeling of working for the country and society. He received his education from Khalsa College.

Role of step and freedom in politics

In 1937, he won the elections to the Punjab Provincial Assembly in the elections held under the Government of India Act 1935. He was a candidate of Panthic Party and later also joined Shiromani Akali Dal. He was close to big leaders like Master Tara Singh.

During the period of independence, when important discussions were going on about the future of the country, Sardar Baldev Singh represented the Punjabi Sikh community. His role was very important in the meetings related to independence and partition.

Became the first Defense Minister of the country

When the country became independent in 1947, a new government was formed. At that time Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru chose Sardar Baldev Singh as the first Defense Minister of the country. This responsibility was not easy. The country was new, the conditions were difficult and at the same time the first Kashmir war broke out between India and Pakistan. Taking charge of the Defense Ministry at such a time was a big challenge. But Sardar Baldev Singh played it firmly.

Why was the name ‘Sardar’ associated?

He was often called ‘Sardar’. In Punjabi and Hindi ‘Sardar’ means leader or chief. Due to his personality and leadership abilities, this address became associated with his name.

What was the salary at that time?

In today’s time, the salary of ministers and people holding high positions is in lakhs. But the period after independence was completely different. The country was not economically strong. At such a time, the leaders themselves went ahead and decided to keep their salaries low. Sardar Baldev Singh used to get Rs 45 per day as Defense Minister. This amount was decided by combining two allowances and the special thing was that it was free from income tax.
