Nowadays everyone is looking for healthy snacks, something which is both tasty and beneficial for the body. In such a situation, Makhana, i.e. fox nuts, has become the favorite of every household. It is eaten during fasting, included in fitness diet and is beneficial for everyone from children to the elderly. But have you ever thought that you can grow Makhana at home? Let us know how…

Makhanas are actually lotus seeds. They are made edible by drying and roasting. In India, it is cultivated mainly in areas like Bihar, Assam and Manipur, but now people in cities are also growing it through tub farming or balcony farming.

Necessary things to grow Makhana at home

Very few materials are required to grow Makhana. All you need is a large tub or plastic drum, some clay soil (like silt), some makhana seeds, and enough sunlight and water. First of all, put 2-3 inches of soil at the bottom of the tub and add some organic manure or cow dung to it. Then add water slowly so that the soil gets completely wet.

Method of preparing seeds

Before sowing, soak Makhana seeds in water for 2 to 3 days. Due to this the seeds become soft and start sprouting. If you want the seeds to germinate quickly, lightly scratch their outer layer and then put them in water. After soaking, put these seeds in the tub where you have prepared soil and water.

proper care method

In about 7 to 10 days the seeds will germinate and start appearing as small plants. As the plants grow, keep increasing the water level in the tub little by little, to about 10 to 12 inches. Add some organic fertilizer every 15 days so that the plants continue to get nutrition.

When will Makhane come?

After about three to four months the plants start flowering. These flowers later become fruits, inside which there are grains. When these fruits start drying, take them out and dry them in the sun. The white grains inside the dry fruits are Makhanas.
