The university said that it gives importance to academic freedom and teachers are given complete freedom to consider complex and sensitive topics. The university said that words like ‘Fundamentalism’ are used to explain the historical and social processes of all religions and not for criticism of any religion.

Professor Aaron Michael Ulleri, who taught this course, also reacted to the controversy. He said that his aim is to explain different forms of Hinduism and not limit it in any one definition.
