Why Measles Is Dangerous For Children: The dangerous outbreak of measles has taken a serious form in Bangladesh, where more than 100 children have died in less than a month. Vaccination campaign launched

On 5 April, the Government of Bangladesh launched an emergency measles-rubella vaccination campaign in collaboration with UNICEF, the World Health Organization and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The aim of this campaign is to provide protection to more than 12 lakh children who have not yet been vaccinated and who are at high risk of infection. Bangladesh Health Minister Sardar Mohammad Sakhawat Hussain said that in view of the current situation, the Health Ministry has taken rapid steps and the situation is being monitored.

How does this disease spread?

According to the World Health Organization, measles is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus, which spreads through air and can cause serious problems and even death. More than 900 cases have been reported since March, due to which the pressure on the health system has increased. Currently, this campaign focuses on children aged between six months to five years, especially in those districts where the risk of infection is high. Later there are plans to expand it to the entire country.

UNICEF representative in Bangladesh said that vaccination is very important for the safety of children. Expressing concern over the increasing cases, he said that small and weak children are most at risk. He also told that there are many children who have not received any vaccine till now or have been incompletely vaccinated. At the same time, infants under nine months of age, who are not yet eligible for regular vaccination, are at greater risk of infection.

Experts have warned regarding this situation that if vaccination is not done in time, measles can quickly become fatal. The Deputy Director of the Infectious Disease Hospital of the capital Dhaka has appealed to the parents to immediately take their children to the hospital as soon as symptoms of high fever or measles appear and not to take medicine without doctor’s advice. At present, the government and health agencies are trying together to control this outbreak.
