With the onset of winter, people start adopting various measures to keep themselves warm. While warm clothes are used to keep the body warm, heater, blower or fireplace is used to increase the temperature of the room. This definitely makes the room warmer than the cold outside, but sometimes this method can also become life threatening.

Danger of suffocation due to burning of fire or blower in a closed room

Every year such incidents occur in winter, where people die due to suffocation while sleeping. A similar incident was recorded last year also, while this year also many people have lost their lives in January and September. Giving information to the team of ABP Live, senior Dr. Aman of Maggo Hospital, one of the big hospitals of West Delhi, said that when a fireplace or any burning object is lit in a closed room, it quickly depletes the oxygen in the room. Due to lack of fresh air from outside, the amount of oxygen continuously decreases and during this time the carbon monoxide released from the fire enters the body through breath, which is extremely fatal.

Why does carbon monoxide cause deep coma?

When carbon monoxide enters the body, it sticks to hemoglobin. Due to this, carboxy-hemoglobin is formed, when the quantity increases, the person goes into deep sleep. This condition is like a deep coma and sometimes the person never wakes up – he dies while sleeping.

How to avoid this danger? Keep these important things in mind

Do not keep the room where bonfire or fireplace is lit completely closed and keep a bucket of water handy.

If many people are sleeping in the room, then extinguish the fire before sleeping.

Burning the fireplace reduces the oxygen in the room—don’t make it a habit.

If you notice symptoms like chest pain due to burning the fireplace or heater daily in a closed room, then be alert immediately.

While running the heater or blower, open the room for some time and let the air come in.

Do not keep inflammable objects near the heater.

Make sure to switch off the heater before sleeping, this is important to save life.

Keep a vessel of water in the room so that the air does not become dry.

If you are forced to use a heater or blower, keep drinking lukewarm water, soup or tea.

Keep using moisturizer to protect the skin from dryness.

Vitamin Deficiency Liver Risk: If these vitamins are reduced in the body, the liver will become fatty, make preparations immediately to avoid it.
