Then Yorkshire came to bat in its second innings and declared the innings after scoring 246 runs for 6 wickets. Manav Suthar also shone in the debut test

Manav did wonders in the debut test and won the title of ‘Player of the Match’. While bowling, he took 6 wickets in the first innings and 1 wicket in his bag in the second innings. Apart from this, Manav had scored 28 runs while batting.

If we look at Manav’s first class career, till now he has played 31 matches. While bowling in 56 innings of these matches, Manav has taken 140 wickets. While batting the rest, he scored 1043 runs in 51 innings, which included 1 century and 6 half-centuries.

Manav Suthar has performed a historic feat in his Test debut match. In the first match against Afghanistan, he created history by taking 5 wickets. Suthar is the 10th Indian bowler to have taken a 5-wicket haul on his Test debut. He took 6 wickets for 33 runs in the first innings against Afghanistan.

He has made a place in the list of great bowlers who bowled with the best figures in Test debut innings. But his most special record is that he is only the second cricketer in the 21st century to take a 5-wicket haul in his debut innings.

History created in the 21st century

So far in the 21st century, only two Indian bowlers have taken 5 or more wickets in their debut Test innings. The first Indian to do so in this century was Amit Mishra, who took 5 wickets for 71 runs in his debut innings against Australia. After 18 years, Manav Suthar has taken a 5-wicket haul in his Test debut innings.

India has had a disappointing performance in domestic Test matches in recent times, but its team is still very strong and it will try to prepare the right combination in the one-off Test cricket match against Afghanistan starting here from Saturday before the important matches of the World Test Championship (WTC). Earlier, a Test match was played between these two teams in 2018 in which Afghanistan lost 10 wickets between lunch and tea session. Now in 2026, the Afghanistan team led by Hashmatullah Shahidi will try to give a tough challenge to the Indian team which is going through a phase of change and is still struggling to prepare the proper combination. Despite this, India seems to have the upper hand. The number three batsman and a possible successor to Ravindra Jadeja in red-ball cricket are two aspects that head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill would like to sort out in this match ahead of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in August. Both Sai Sudarshan and stylish Devdutt Padikkal are in the race for the number three batsman. But the Indian team management has started looking for his replacement and hence it has kept Manav Suthar and Harsh Dubey in the team. If we look at the net practice of the last few days, Suthar appears to be a better player but Dubey has the upper hand no less.

Manav seems to be an aggressive bowler while Dubey’s attitude is a bit defensive but his batting is stronger. As far as the competition between India and Afghanistan is concerned, the difference becomes clear even by looking at the statistics. Afghanistan played its first Test match against India in Bengaluru in 2018, which the hosts won within two days. Since then, Afghanistan has played 11 more matches till June 2026. In the same period, India has played 67 Test matches, out of which Rishabh Pant alone has been a part of 49 matches. Incidentally, when Afghanistan last played against India, Pant had not even made his Test cricket debut.

Only KL Rahul is part of the current Indian Test team from the 2018 team, while Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and batsman Rahmat Shah also played in that match. Afghanistan’s entire batting line-up has a total of nine Test centuries, while the batsmen included in the Indian Test team have scored 39 centuries. Shahidi’s team had set up a camp in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, but practice sessions alone cannot prepare a team for a Test match.

The first match of the Test series between India and Afghanistan is to be played in Mullanpur from June 6. Before the selection of Manav Suthar, Rajasthan had produced only a handful of Test cricketers. These include Salim Durrani, who represented India from 1959–60 to 1972–73 and played 29 Test matches, in which he scored 1,202 runs and took 75 wickets.

Apart from these, Hanumant Singh played 14 Tests between 1963-64 to 1969-70 and scored 686 runs. Parthasarathy Sharma scored 187 runs in five Tests from 1974–75 to 1976–77. Pankaj Singh played two Tests during 2014-15 and took two wickets.

Manav Suthar’s domestic cricket record has been extremely impressive across all formats, having taken 129 wickets and scoring 945 runs in 29 first-class matches. He has played 25 matches in List-A cricket, in which he scored 350 runs and took 34 wickets. Suthar has played 29 T20 matches in his career, in which he scored 94 runs and took 25 wickets.
