Iran’s only active nuclear power plant, Bushehr, was attacked with a projectile missile on Tuesday evening (17 March 2026), causing panic in the area. However, it is a matter of relief that there was no damage to the plant and no employee was injured. This incident has happened at a time when the war between America, Israel and Iran has reached its third week. Because of this, concerns about nuclear security have increased further.

According to Reuters report, Iran immediately informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about this incident. The agency said that the projectile missile hit the premises of the plant, but there was no harm to the plant and the people working there. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi appealed to all countries to avoid any kind of military action near such sensitive places, because it could lead to a major nuclear accident. Iran’s Atomic Energy Agency also clearly said that there was no damage to the reactor or its main parts and the radiation level was completely normal. Meanwhile, Rosatom also condemned the incident and said that the plant is completely safe.

Where is Bushehr Nuclear Plant located?

Bushehr Nuclear Plant is located on the banks of the Persian Gulf and is the only active nuclear plant in Iran, hence its security is considered very important. At present the situation is normal, but tension remains in the area. After this incident, security has been further increased and investigation is ongoing. Let us tell you that last year America had attacked three nuclear bases of Iran, which included Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan. Many Iranian scientists were also killed in that attack. America had used B-2 stealth bomber for the attack, which can destroy even the place located 300 feet below the ground.

Un Chief on Iran Israel Conflict: United Nations Secretary -General Antonio Gutaras while addressing an emergency meeting of the Security Council amid tension in West Asia, stating that the US bombing on Iran’s nuclear bases indicates a “dangerous twist” in this threatened area. He said that the possibility of military conflict in West Asia already unstable conditions has increased even more. US President Donald Trump had announced a military attack on Iran’s three major nuclear centers, Natanj and Isfahan. Soon after, 15 member countries of the United Nations Security Council held an emergency session on Sunday, which discussed these attacks and their effects.

Appeal of Gutaras: No military action, negotiation is necessary
Gutaras told the Security Council, “This attack further enhances the instability already in the region. I have been opposing any kind of military growth in West Asia since the beginning.” He warned that the people of the region are not in a position to bear the destruction again, and if the process of retaliation starts, the whole world may get caught in a new war marsh.

Appeal to give a chance to diplomacy, not war
Gutaras insisted that the international community should take immediate and decisive steps to start serious and continuous talks on the Iranian nuclear program again. He also said that Iran should fully respect the Nuclear Non -Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as it is the foundation of global peace and security.

Future warning: one will choose from two routes
The United Nations chief also warned that the world will now have to choose one of the two paths – or the path that leads to war, destruction and disintegration of international system, or the path that reduces tension, promote dialogue and moves from diplomacy to solution. He clearly said, “We know which is the right path and we should walk on it.”

IAEA chief report: Nuclear safety threatens
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Gursi also informed the Security Council that the attacks on Iran’s nuclear bases have had a serious impact on the country’s nuclear security and safety. He said, “Although no radioactive radiation has spread from these attacks yet, the possibility of this happening in future cannot be ruled out.”

Status of Fordo and Natanj
Fordo is Iran’s major uranium enhancement center, where up to 60 percent uranium is enhanced. IAEA said that at the moment he has not received any major damage in the forces, but made it clear that there should never be military attacks on such locations, because it can cause radioactive threats in that country and surrounding areas.

IAEA request: Maximum restraint
Rafael Grosy appealed to all parties to exercise maximum restraint and said that such military actions could endanger people’s lives and create serious obstacles in the ongoing diplomatic process to guarantee Iran’s nuclear weapons.

America’s response
America’s caretaker representative at the United Nations, Dorothy Xi said that the Security Council should appeal to Iran to stop the 47 years of efforts to destroy Israel, end their nuclear program, stop attacks on Americans and American interests and start “goodwill peace talks”.
