Congress leader and MP Rahul Gandhi reached Chandigarh on Tuesday to meet the family of Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar. After landing at the airport, he went to Kumar’s residence at around 11 am and met the family and expressed his condolences. He paid tribute to Puran Kumar.

Rahul Gandhi then said, “This is a tragic incident. Puran Kumar is a government official and the Chief Minister of Haryana had personally promised him that an independent and impartial investigation would be initiated and action would be taken. This promise was made three days ago, but has not been fulfilled till now. Both his daughters, who have lost their father, are under extreme pressure at this time.” Expressing sympathy towards the family, Rahul Gandhi said that they should be ensured justice and the concerned authorities should take immediate action.

Rahul Gandhi said that it is clear that the officers were systematically harassing and threatening for the last several years. He believes that this is sending a wrong message to crores of Dalit citizens across the country that no matter how successful you are, because of being a Dalit you can be suppressed, crushed and ignored.

Rahul Gandhi appealed to the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Haryana to fulfill the commitment of justice made to the family. He also said that the officers whose arrest is demanded should be arrested immediately and an impartial investigation into the case should be ensured.

At the same time, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi wrote in her tweet on Twitter, “Senior IPS officer of Haryana, Shri Y Puran Kumar ji had recently committed suicide after being fed up with caste harassment. His family is searching for justice but no hearing is taking place. This entire episode is proof that even after reaching high positions under BJP rule, the people of Dalit community are not safe nor is there justice for them. Such shameful incidents are bad for the country and society. There are stigmas.”

The family demanded his arrest

The family of IPS officer Puran Kumar has demanded the arrest of the officers allegedly responsible for his suicide. Senior IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, the officer’s wife, said Kapoor and Bijarnia’s names should be registered in the FIR for abetting her husband’s suicide.

The family has made it clear that without paying attention to their demands, no consent will be given for post-mortem and cremation. This step shows their strong desire and pressure to ensure justice in this case.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday (October 11) expressed grief over the alleged suicide of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, terming it a very unfortunate incident. He assured the family of the deceased IPS of strict action and justice.

CM Nayab Singh Saini said, “No matter how influential the criminal is, he will not be spared. If injustice has been done to the family, our government will work to provide justice.”

According to HT report, while speaking at the BJP state executive meeting in Panchkula, CM Saini paid tribute to the late IPS officer by observing two minutes of silence. IPS Puran Kumar committed suicide on 7 October

Y Puran Kumar was a 2001 batch IPS officer. He was found dead in his residence in Sector-11, Chandigarh on October 7 and bullet marks were found on his body. He had reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself with a service revolver.

Case registered against many officers including DGP

Chandigarh Police on Thursday (October 09) registered an FIR against Haryana DGP Shatrujit Singh Kapoor and 10 others on charges of instigating IPS officer Y Puran Kumar to commit suicide. This came after Kumar’s wife, IAS Amneet P Kumar, and her family had demanded registration of an FIR into the death of the IPS officer.

In this case, the police also found an 8-page suicide note. In his last note, he had named several senior officials, accusing them of caste-based discrimination and harassment.

FIR has been registered in IPS Y Puran suicide case. A case of abetment to suicide has been registered. His IAS wife Amneet P Kumar had filed a complaint. Chandigarh Police said that a case has been registered against the people whose names were in the ‘final note’ of IPS. A case has also been registered under SC-ST Atrocities Act.

Congress MP Kumari Shailja said that the suicide of a Dalit IPS officer in Haryana is very sad, worrying and a matter of deep pain. He posted on the social media platform

IAS Amneet P Kumar, wife of IPS Y Puran Kumar, lodged a complaint with the Chandigarh Police. Demanded to register a case against Haryana DGP Shatrujit Singh Kapoor and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijaraniyan for abetment of suicide and under the SC-ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. Before committing suicide, he was posted in the Police Training College. His wife Amneet P Kumar is an IAS officer of Haryana cadre. At the time of the incident, she was on a Japan tour with CM Nayab Singh Saini. Police had also recovered a suicide note from the incident site.

IPS Y Puran Kumar shot suicide by shooting

IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, posted as ADGP in Haryana, allegedly shot himself at his residence in Chandigarh Sector-11. According to the information, in the afternoon on Tuesday (October 07), the police received information that Y Puran Kumar committed suicide in the government house in Chandigarh Sector-11.

IPS officer’s body was sent for postmortem

After receiving the information, the police immediately reached the spot. After this, the police sealed the IPS government house and then the team of forensic experts were called for investigation. According to the information, preliminary investigation has revealed that IPS Y Puran Kumar shot himself with his license revolver. At present, the police have taken the body of the IPS officer in its possession and sent it for postmortem.

Y Puran Kumar posted in police training college

Y Puran Kumar was a senior IPS officer of Haryana cadre and was currently posted in the Police Training College. He had experience of working in many important positions in the State Police. However, according to officials, the cause of the incident has not been known. The police is investigating the case from all the angles.
