Amidst the rising prices of gas cylinders and concerns about supply, news of relief has now come to light. Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has discovered a wonderful way by which dry leaves can be converted into cooking fuel.

Fuel will be made from leaves
Mumbai-based IIT Bombay has been working on a special technology for the last 10 years, in which cooking fuel is made by collecting dry leaves falling on the campus. With the help of this technology, the institute has reduced its LPG usage by 30 to 40 percent.

Big challenges came in the beginning
This project was started by Professor Sanjay Mahajani in the year 2014. The initial phase was not easy. During the burning of Indian biomass, a solid substance called ‘clinker’ was formed, which jammed the machines and caused damage to the system. Not only this, initially during this process, smoke was released for about 30 minutes, making it difficult to use. But the team did not give up and kept on improving. After continuous research and experiments, by the year 2016, the team found a solution to this problem. He developed such a technology which reduced the problem of clinker formation by about 100 times. This made the whole process more smooth and useful.

How is fuel made from dry leaves?
In this technique, first of all dry leaves are collected. Then they are cut into small pieces and prepared in the form of pellets. After this, these pellets are heated in a chamber with low oxygen. This process is called gasification, in which a fuel gas comes out from the leaves. This gas burns cleanly and provides a steady and reliable flame for cooking.

New burner increased efficiency
Professor Sandeep Kumar joined this project in the year 2017. He designed a special type of burner, so that this gas could be used in a better way. This technology has also received a patent, which proves its specialty and usefulness.

Successful use in canteen
Today this technology is being used in the staff canteen of IIT Bombay. There has been a 30 to 40 percent reduction in LPG consumption here. Also, this system gives about 60 percent thermal efficiency, which makes it even more useful. The best thing is that the pollution emitted from it is also very less, due to which its impact on the environment is also limited.

Preparation for implementation on a large scale
This technology has now been licensed to Infix Energy, so that it can be used on a large scale. In the coming time, it will be implemented in big hostels and other institutions. It is estimated that by using this technology, about Rs 50 lakh can be saved every year. Apart from this, it can replace about 90 tonnes of LPG and about 300 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced.

Today, there is increasing concern across the country regarding the availability of gas for cooking. Amid pressure on LPG supply in the country, institutions are taking steps to manage their resources. In this context, IIT Bombay has made temporary changes in the mess menu of its hostel. Its main objective is to save the limited stock of LPG and ensure that students get food without interruption.

IIT Bombay officials said that now such dishes will be served in the mess which consume less gas. With this change, hostel residents are experiencing the new menu from March 14. This decision also makes it clear how even big institutions are exercising caution amid global conditions and uncertainty about fuel availability.

What changes have been made in the mess?
According to the revised menu, only one vegetarian dish will be served in every meal. The previously available non-vegetarian dishes have been discontinued for the time being. In addition, high energy-intensive cooking methods such as frying and long boiling have also been temporarily discontinued. Instead of sweets, milkshake or ice cream will now be served at dinner. Milk will now be served at room temperature or chilled, and lunch and dinner will also include fruits.

According to the message from IIT Bombay, these changes have been made keeping in mind the shortage of LPG. Due to the current global circumstances and war-like situation, fuel supply has been affected. Therefore, those dishes which required more gas for cooking have been temporarily removed. Other fuel management measures

IIT Bombay is not completely dependent on LPG. Biogas and electric cooking options are also already available, however, the institute has decided to manage resources responsibly by reducing fuel consumption until supplies become normal. Not only mess, but activities like tea parties, gala dinners, special lunches or dinners have also been postponed. Students have been advised not to pay attention to rumors and not to panic. IIT Bombay officials said that these changes are temporary. As soon as LPG supply becomes normal, regular mess menu and normal food services will be resumed.

The gender ratio has also been mentioned in the JIC report. This year, a total of 14,524 seats have been won by boys, while women took admission in 3,664 seats.
