Amidst the pressure of studies, being away from home and worrying about the future, the safety of students has become a big concern today. Keeping this in mind, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) has taken a big step keeping in mind the safety of the students in its hostels. The institute has decided to install special safety devices in the ceiling fans installed in the hostel rooms, so that suicidal incidents can be prevented. This decision has been taken after several incidents of suicide in the institute in the last two years. According to the report, out of the total incidents in 23 IIT institutes across the country, about 30% of the cases have been related to IIT Kanpur alone.

What is the new system?

New safety devices are designed in such a way that if more weight is put on the fan than the prescribed limit, an alarm starts sounding and the fan itself tilts downwards. This will prevent any kind of dangerous attempt.

Other changes in hostels

• The iron pipes in the rooms are being removed, which students used to dry clothes.
• This work is going on in 3 old hostel buildings (about 1500 rooms)
• These devices will be gradually installed in all 14 hostels.

Administration and students’ response

Director of IIT Kanpur, Prof. Manindra Aggarwal said that this decision has been taken on the recommendation of an external expert committee. He says that the institute is very serious about the safety of the students and is taking every possible step so that the campus environment remains safe and positive.

Students’ reactions to this move vary. Many students have called it a step in the right direction. He says that if even one life is saved then this effort will be considered successful. At the same time, some students believe that technical measures alone are not enough. He says that the real need is to pay attention to issues like mental health, study pressure and loneliness. He wants the institute to take more concrete steps in this direction.

Focus on counseling also

The institute has also made it clear that now special attention will be given to mental health. For this, a 24-hour counseling helpline is being started. Students will be encouraged to express their views openly and seek help. The administration believes that constant communication with students, friendly environment and timely counseling can play a big role in reducing stress.
