The dream of getting admission in the top engineering colleges of the country will no longer be limited to JEE Advanced only. IIT Kharagpur has taken a big decision, under which now even those students who have performed brilliantly in International Olympiads or have won medals in national and international sports competitions will be able to get admission in IIT. This scheme will be implemented from the academic session of 2026. The Senate of IIT Kharagpur has approved this proposal and now a special committee is deciding its terms and conditions.

Opportunity will be available under SEA and SCOPE scheme

Two schemes will be run under this scheme – SEA (Scholastic Excellence Admission) and SCOPE (Sports Excellence Admission). Students applying under both these schemes will not be required to pass JEE Advanced. However, they will have to pass 12th class and also adhere to the age limit as per JEE rules. The aim of this step is to ensure that the promising students of the country, who are excellent in a particular field, get an opportunity to study in IITs, even if they have not appeared for the JEE Advanced exam.

Guidelines may be issued soon!

IIT Kharagpur will soon release complete guidelines explaining how to apply, how the selection will be done and how the available seats will be allotted. It will also be told how the medals won in Olympiads or Games will be scrutinized and how there will be coordination with JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority).

The system can be implemented in other IITs also

If this system is successful in IIT Kharagpur, then in the coming time it can also be implemented in IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Gandhinagar and other IIT institutes. This will provide new avenues of study to students across the country and will reduce their dependence on JEE Advanced. This step is a great news for those students who bring glory to the country through Olympiad, sports or any other talent. Now the doors of IIT are going to open not only for students who perform well in studies but also in other fields.

On Friday (May 23, 2025), the Supreme Court took a dig at the Rajasthan government on the increase in cases of suicide of students in Kota city and called the situation ‘serious’. A bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R. Mahadevan said that in a strict tone, he has asked the government what he has done so far in this matter. He said that in just five months, 14 students committed suicide and in the same city. The court has warned that do not take it lightly, the court can also adopt a strict stance. The court has also expressed displeasure over the fact that an FIR was filed four days later in the suicide case of a student of IIT Kharagpur.

Justice Pardiwala asked the lawyer who is presenting the state of Rajasthan, ‘What are you doing as a state? Why are these children committing suicide and why only in quota? Did you not consider this as a state? ‘ The lawyer said that a special investigation team (SIT) was formed in the state to investigate suicide cases.

The Supreme Court was hearing the case of the death of a 22 -year -old student studying in IIT, Kharagpur. The student was found hanging on the noose in his hostel room on 4 May. The court is also dealing with another case, in which a girl of NEET examination was found dead in her room in Kota, where she lived with her parents.

The bench came to know that an FIR was lodged in connection with the death of a student of IIT Kharagpur. The Supreme Court questioned the delay of four days in the FIR filed on 8 May. The court said that do not take these things lightly. These are very serious things. The bench cited the Supreme Court’s 24 March verdict, in which frequent cases of suicide of students in higher educational institutions were noticed and a national work force was formed to remove the mental health concerns of the students and prevent such incidents.

The Supreme Court on Friday said that according to the decision, the FIR is required to be filed immediately in such cases. The bench asked the concerned police officer present in the court, “Why did you take four days to register an FIR?” The official said that an FIR has been lodged and the case is under investigation.

The bench told them, ‘You continue the investigation as per the law.’ It came to the record that IIT Kharagpur officials informed the police, after which he came to know about the suicide. However, the bench was not satisfied with the explanation of the lawyer and police officer of IIT Kharagpur.

The Supreme Court said, ‘We could have taken a very strict stand in this case.’ The bench said that the investigation should be done rapidly in the right direction. In the quota suicide case, the bench justified not to register an FIR. The state counsel said that the investigation of the case is going on and the SIT is aware of the cases of suicide in the state. The bench asked the lawyer, ‘How many students have died in Kota so far?’ The lawyer said that when 14 deaths occurred, the court said, ‘Why are these students dying?’

The bench said that it will take time for the work force constituted by the Supreme Court to give a holistic report. The bench asked the lawyer of Rajasthan, ‘You are contesting our decision. Why did you not register an FIR? ‘ The bench said that the girl was not living in the residence of the institute. She left this in November 2024 and started living with her parents. The bench has summoned the police officer concerned in the Kota case to clarify the situation on 14 July.
